The Department of Biology at the University of Virginia’s College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences seeks applications for a full-time Laboratory Technician to support the research of Dr. Harris Kaplan. The Kaplan Lab studies neuronal circuits regulating sleep in infant and adult mice.

Responsibilities
  • Perform mouse brain dissections, slicing, staining, and microscopy
  • Prepare mouse brain tissue samples for single‑cell sequencing
  • Conduct mouse behavior experiments
  • Manage mouse colony including genotyping
  • Perform molecular biology tasks such as cloning transgenic constructs
  • Record accurate information and logs of experimental data
  • Support other lab members with collection of data
  • Other duties may be assigned as needed
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education:

    High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience:

    At least 1 year of laboratory experience, which may include student experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in biology or a related field
  • Experience with molecular biology and rodent brain histology
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to effectively incorporate feedback
Physical Demands

This position can require extensive periods of standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. It also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures that require fine finger manipulation.

Salary Range

The anticipated hiring range is $19.00–$21.00 per hour, commensurate with education and experience.

Anticipated Start Date

August–September 2026.

  • This is a restricted position, dependent on funding availability.
  • This position is based in Charlottesville, VA, and must be performed fully on‑site.
