Overview

The Beirne

B. Carter Center Immunology Research (CIC) at the University of Virginia (UVA) School of Medicine seeks a Laboratory Technician (Level 1 or
2) to join the Hahn and Sun laboratories. The role participates in research on host-pathogen interactions and chronic inflammatory disease and contributes to lab management.

Responsibilities
  • Use experimental methods including handling mice, small tissue dissection, histology and immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, cognitive performance, genotyping, and real-time PCR.
  • Work with students, post‑docs, and other lab members to assist in all aspects of experiments.
  • Perform lab management tasks: ordering supplies, receiving items, equipment service and maintenance, and coordinating schedules for lab meetings and shared equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with University, Federal, and State policies and procedures and consult regularly with the Principal Investigator.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Physical Demands

This position involves extensive periods of standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals, keyboarding, and fine finger manipulation for bench work and animal procedures.

Minimum Requirements Lab Tech 1
  • Education:

    High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience:

    At least 1 year of laboratory experience, which may include student experience. A bachelor’s degree will be considered in lieu of experience.
Lab Tech 2
  • Education:

    Associate’s degree.
  • Experience:

    At least 2 years of laboratory experience which may include student experience. A bachelor’s degree in a related science field will be considered in lieu of experience.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Preference for those with a degree in a related science field and prior laboratory experience.
  • Self‑guided and creative in seeking solutions to experimental/design challenges.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience working with laboratory animals.
Benefits

This is a full‑time position located in Charlottesville, Virginia, with benefits  position will sponsor applicants already in the U.S. for work visas. The hiring range is commensurate with education and experience. The University will perform background checks on all new hires. A pre‑employment health screen is required.
