Research Scientist, Clinical Research
The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Virginia is seeking a Research Scientist/Research Associate to study how neuronal and immune systems shape the microenvironment of intervertebral disc degeneration, with the long‑term goal of identifying effective therapies to treat back pain and to study the pathogenesis and potential therapeutics of intervertebral disc degeneration. Candidates must have a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree or MD/PhD in cell and molecular biology‑related fields.
Applicants should have experience in molecular and cellular techniques, including cell culture, in vitro assays, animal handling, flow cytometry, and histological analysis. Surgical or clinical experience is preferred, and background in immunology is highly desirable. Effective spoken and written communication skills are essential. Proficiency in computer programs for data compilation and evaluation and advanced Microsoft Office skills including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are required.
This is a restricted position contingent upon the continued availability of funding. The successful candidate will receive a one‑year appointment, renewable in one‑year increments up to three years with the possibility of extension for two additional years.
Minimum RequirementsEducation: Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree or MD/PhD in molecular biology and bioengineering‑related fields.
Experience:
- Experience in molecular biology
- Background in cell culture, in vitro assays, and histological studies
- Effective spoken and written communication skills
- Proficiency in computer programs for data compilation and evaluation and advanced Microsoft Office skills including Word, Excel, and Power Point
- Candidate with animal surgical experience preferred
Licensure: None
Physical DemandsThis is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings and programs.
Salary Range - $55,000 - $72,000
