Research Scientist / Research Associate
The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Virginia is seeking to fill the position of Research Scientist / Research Associate to study how neuronal and immune systems shape the microenvironment of intervertebral disc degeneration, with the long-term goal of identifying effective therapies to treat back pain, a leading cause of disability, along with the study of pathogenesis and potential therapeutics of intervertebral disc degeneration.
Candidates must have a minimum of a Bachelors degree or MD/PhD in cell and molecular biology-related fields.
Applicants should have experience in molecular and cellular techniques, including cell culture, in vitro assays, animal handling, flow cytometry, and histological analysis. Surgical or clinical experience is preferred, and background in immunology is highly desirable. Effective spoken and written communication skills, proficiency in computer programs for data compilation and evaluation, and advanced Microsoft Office skills including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are required.
This is a restricted position contingent upon the continued availability of funding. The successful candidate will receive a one-year appointment. Contingent upon satisfactory performance and the availability of funds, the appointment is renewable in one-year increments up to three years with the possibility of extension for two additional years.
This position will remain open until filled.

- Experience in molecular biology.
- Backgrounds in cell culture, in vitro assays, and histological studies.
- Effective spoken and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in computer programs for data compilation and evaluation and advanced Microsoft Office skills including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Candidates with animal surgical experience are preferred.
- Licensure: None.
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
Salary Range$55,000 – $72,000.
