Research Scientist, Genetics / Genomics, Biomedical Science, Biology
The Department of Biology, at the University of Virginia, is seeking a postdoctoral research associate to work in the laboratory of Dr. Michael Timko. The individual will join a well‑established research program aimed at plant genetic engineering.
Work in the laboratory is currently focused on the identification of genes involved in response to plant biotic and abiotic stress response and resistance and synthetic biology approaches to detection of environmental contaminants. Opportunities exist to become involved in cutting edge work aimed at the creation of novel gene functions for the development of biosensors for the built environment.
Responsibilities- Perform genetic manipulation of genes and expression vectors, and perform transformation and regeneration of plants.
- Perform routine molecular biological experiments including DNA extractions, gPCR/RT-PCR, gene expression profiling with RNAseq technologies.
- Provide supervision and training for graduate and undergraduate researchers.
- This position requires that the candidate has completed a Ph.D. in plant biology, biochemistry, plant genetics/genomics, or a closely related field by the appointment start date.
- Prior training and experience in basic molecular biology, gene cloning and gene vector construction as evidenced in the applicant's published works.
- Experience in plant cell culture and gene expression analysis/bioinformatics a plus.
- Prior experience with gene editing (CRSPR, etc) methodologies highly desirable.
Final date to receive applications:
Review of applications will begin on July 17, 2026, and the position will remain open until filled. The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment.
This is a one‑year appointment that may be renewed for up to two additional one‑year terms, contingent upon satisfactory performance and continued availability of funding.
