Position: Research Associate, The Robert M. Berne Cardiovascular Research Center

The Robert M. Berne Cardiovascular Research Center (CVRC) at the University of Virginia is seeking a Research Associate to investigate calcium signaling mechanisms and ion channels in systemic and pulmonary vasculature within the Sonkusare Laboratory. The laboratory employs state‑of‑the‑art calcium imaging, super‑resolution imaging, patch‑clamp electrophysiology, pressure myography, radiotelemetric blood pressure measurements, and cell‑specific knockout mouse models to discover novel strategies for rescuing vascular dysfunction in cardiovascular disorders.

The incumbent will participate in multiple lab projects, write reports for study sponsors, papers, and grant applications, and develop research programs as time permits, attending laboratory meetings and CVRC‑related seminars and working with graduate students, technicians, fellows, and collaborators.

Responsibilities
  • Full‑time research or scholarship at the University.
  • Preparatory for a full‑time academic or research career.
  • Supervised by a senior scholar; publication of research results.
  • Other duties may be assigned as described above.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Doctoral degree at the time of hire.
  • Ideal candidates will have a Ph.D. with a strong background in cardiovascular physiology.
  • Obtained PhD within the past three years (eligible if terminal degree received after May 2023).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Highly motivated to develop new research avenues.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience in vascular physiology, calcium imaging, ion channels, and cardiovascular disorders.
Physical Demands

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job may occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings and programs.

Salary Range

Salary will be commensurate with education and experience.

Position Type & Work Location

  • Restricted position dependent on funding availability.
  • Based in Charlottesville, VA; must be performed fully on‑site.
