Research Scientist in Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry is seeking qualified candidates for a Research Scientist position to work in the lab of Professor Marcos Pires.

We are seeking a highly qualified and dynamic Chemical Biologist with extensive experience in organic chemistry and chemical biology. The successful candidate will lead research projects focused on the design, synthesis, and optimization of small molecules and chemical probes to investigate their accumulation in bacterial cells. By understanding the mechanisms of compound uptake and retention, this research aims to enhance the efficacy of antibiotics against drug-resistant strains.

In this role, the researcher will develop and apply novel methodologies to create new classes of chemical tools. They will also collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of microbiologists, pharmacologists, and computational scientists to synergize efforts in understanding bacterial resistance and optimizing molecular properties for improved drug delivery.

• Conduct and lead research focused on the development of novel antibiotics.
• Design and synthesize new pharmaceutical compounds and chemical probes with therapeutic potential.
• Apply advanced techniques in medicinal chemistry, pharmacology, and chemical biology.
• Analyze and interpret complex research data, contributing to high-impact publications and presentations.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to advance drug discovery pipelines.
• Mentor junior researchers and contribute to the development of a collaborative, innovative research environment.

A Ph.D. or master's degree with significant experience in Biomedical Sciences, Organic Chemistry, Chemical Biology, or a related field is required by the start date.

• Proven expertise in the design and synthesis of pharmaceutical compounds.
• A strong track record in drug discovery and optimization processes.
• Experience in applying chemical biology and pharmacological techniques.
• Excellent communication skills and a strong publication record in drug-discovery-related fields.
• For this Research Scientist position, 5+ years of relevant research experience (post-Ph.D.) is preferred.

Anticipated Hiring Range: $75,000 - $80,000 commensurate with education and experience.

This is a one-year appointment, and the appointment may be renewed contingent upon available funding and satisfactory performance.
