Job Description

The School Security Officer will maintain a safe and secure environment within the school and during school‑sponsored activities. Responsibilities include student supervision, visitor management, emergency response, and enforcement of school safety policies.

General Definition of Work

Performs a variety of duties required to maintain a safe and secure environment in schools, centers, academies, or for community education programs held during or after school, or on weekends when scheduled. Enforces policies and regulations designed to create a culture of safety and security in the school district. Manages students’ activity and behavior during school and at school‑sponsored public events.

Assists in response to emergency situations.

Essential Functions
  • Supervises student activity in areas such as hallways, stairwells, cafeterias, bathrooms, auditoriums, gymnasiums, and exterior school property throughout the school day.
  • Manages the Visitor Management System, greets and assists visitors.
  • Addresses unauthorized visitors, identifies intruders, recognizes unsafe or unexpected behaviors, and monitors unsecured entrances.
  • Assists school administration, staff, and students in upholding the school’s code of conduct and safety policies. Responds immediately to requests for assistance.
  • Maintains a high level of visibility during student arrival, school day activity, and departure.
  • Builds and promotes positive relationships with students.
  • Identifies situations that could become conflictual and intervenes to de‑escalate or address student behavior.
  • Resolves disputes between students, encourages positive communication, and works to minimize conflicts.
  • Acts as a liaison between students and teachers.
  • Assists principal and staff in ceasing altercations, arguments, or other disruptive or illegal behavior by employing the appropriate response within ACPS policy.
  • Assists with locating students.
  • Monitors parking lots, car pick‑up, and bus areas throughout the day and during student arrivals and departures. Enforces parking policies and directs vehicle traffic as needed.
  • Assists with the execution of emergency response procedures including evacuation, lockdown drills, and medical emergencies. Maintains functional knowledge of building systems and procedures to properly respond to emergencies.
  • Provides security at athletics events, graduations, and other events as requested. Engages the public in a professional manner.
  • Communicates effectively and timely with staff and promotes a positive work environment.
  • Completes written reports and provides statements as necessary.
  • Adheres to established work schedules and participates in meetings and training sessions.
  • Interacts positively with a non‑traditional and diverse student and employee population, promoting a fair and equitable school environment.
  • Assists school administrators with monitoring CCTV systems and evaluating student behavior.
  • Maintains knowledge and functional use of relevant technology and equipment. Operates computers, weapons detectors, Automated External Defibrillators, camera surveillance systems, radio communications, basic office equipment and other security equipment.
  • Participates in training for certification, recertification, and pursues professional growth opportunities.
  • Coordinates with and assists emergency response personnel (fire, EMS, and police) who respond to calls at or on school grounds.
  • Assists school administrators with the investigation of incidents and assists in student searches as directed.
  • Inspects the physical security of the building and reports any unusual conditions or maintenance problems to appropriate staff in a timely manner.
  • Provides testimony in court or before the School Board as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
