Student Safety Coach (Part‑time) – Department of Student Services – 2026‑27 School Year Only
Role focus: work with students in local group homes in Albemarle County Public Schools. Part‑time, 4hrs/day, 200 days/year, start Aug 3, 2026.
Responsibilities- Collaborate with school staff and students to promote equity and maintain a positive environment.
- Provide safety and emergency support: crisis prevention/intervention, emergency response, building security.
- Advocate for equity for all students and families, reducing safety risks.
- Coach staff during crisis situations and direct interventions following IEPs.
- Respond to crises, triage, and coordinate emergency services (911, EMS, Crisis Team).
- Develop positive student relationships and reinforce behavior.
- Debrief problematic behavior using trauma‑informed, non‑punitive models.
- Manage documentation, observations, incident reports, and safety audits.
- Maintain communication with local police, fire, and community partners.
- Coordinate security and visitor protocols, alarm systems, and emergency drills.
- Assist with administrative tasks related to safety, such as investigations, disciplinary compliance, and truancy efforts.
- Perform physical interventions when necessary using least‑restrictive techniques.
- Support restorative practices and engage students, parents, and staff.
- Provide ongoing professional development and participate in relevant committees.
- Perform other duties as assigned within scope of employment.
- Bachelor’s degree in psychology, counseling, social work, law enforcement, criminal justice or related field; or equivalent education/experience.
- One year of related experience required. Preferred: 1+ year.
- Completion of the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services School Security Officer Training and Certification required after 24 months.
- Valid driver's license and ability to transport students.
- Strong knowledge of de‑escalation, trauma‑informed practices, restorative practices, first aid, building security.
- Proficiency in operating security equipment and communication systems.
- Ability to communicate in Spanish and English preferred.
- Physical ability to perform required duties, including standing, walking, and occasional lifting.
Work in a school setting, sometimes in office. Requires walking, standing, and occasional heavy lifting. May encounter stressful situations and minor injuries from student behavior.
Position DetailsApproved salary: $29.19 – $35.02 per hour. Position type:
Part‑time. 2026‑27 School Year only.
