Introduction
The Local Energy Alliance Program (LEAP) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing clean energy solutions through energy efficiency upgrades, weatherization services, and solar initiatives. We assess homes and buildings, provide expert recommendations, connect clients with skilled contractors, and help secure utility and government rebates. Headquartered in downtown Charlottesville, LEAP is committed to creating comfortable, healthy, and energy-efficient spaces for our community.
We are seeking motivated Weatherization Retrofit Technicians to join our team. In this role, you will install insulation (batts, rolls, blown-in, spray foam, and other methods), perform targeted air sealing, duct sealing, and implement other weatherization and energy efficiency improvements. This is a hands-on position that requires attention to detail, adherence to safety standards, and the ability to work in various residential environments, including attics and crawlspaces.
Work is based out of Charlottesville with regular travel to surrounding counties and Northern Virginia. A shared company vehicle is provided for work-related travel.
- Install various types of insulation (fiberglass batts, blown-in cellulose, spray foam, rigid board, etc.)
- Conduct targeted air sealing and duct sealing to improve home efficiency
- Follow OSHA safety procedures and Weatherization Assistance Program Standard Work Specifications.
- Operate, maintain, and care for tools, equipment, and materials used in weatherization work
- Communicate courteously and professionally with clients and homeowners
- Maintain accurate job records and follow LEAP quality control procedures
- Work in varying environments, including tight crawlspaces and attics, year-round
- Take clear, complete photo documentation of all work performed, including before, during, and after images, in accordance with program requirements.
- Clean and restore the work area to its original condition.
- Protect work areas and home interiors/exteriors using drop cloths, poly sheeting, Tyvek booties, etc.
- Maintain a clean and organized job site throughout the project.
- Perform targeted air sealing in attics, basements, crawlspaces, and other areas.
- Install duct sealing measures, windows, doors, and other program-approved improvements.
- Identify and communicate any deviations from the scope of work to the Crew Leader.
- Familiarity with basic residential construction techniques
- Willingness to learn weatherization-specific standards and methods
- Ability to use hand and power tools safely and effectively
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record (no moving violations within the past 12 months)
- Physical ability to work in confined spaces and at heights
- OSHA 10
- Occasional flexibility required based on project needs
- Physical Demand:
Lifting: often under 5 lbs: 75%; often 5-25 lbs: 25%; rare 25-60 lbs; 10%; rare over 60 lbs; 5% Rare, max pounds; 150 lbs 1% of time. - Preferred
Education & Experience:
Field experience in construction, carpentry, HVAC, or other skilled trade;
Mechanical aptitude or experience with tool/equipment maintenance
- Start times ranging from 6:30 AM to 8:00 AM depending on the season—earlier starts during warmer months and later starts during cooler months.
- In-person based in Charlottesville VA.
