Position: Traffic Technician I

Overview

The City's Traffic Technician I performs a variety of entry-level technical and administrative tasks in support of traffic operations related to the maintenance, repair, installation, and replacement of traffic signals, controllers, wiring, pedestrian signals, and other equipment. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Traffic Supervisor.

Compensation — The preferred hiring amount for this position is between $20.45 - $25.14 an hour ($42,536.00 - $52,291.20 annually).

Responsibilities
  • Performs and assists in general maintenance of outside traffic infrastructure.
  • Supports the planning, maintenance, and completion of activities related to the repair, installation, replacement, troubleshooting, testing, and general maintenance of traffic signals, streetlights, controllers, wiring, pedestrian signals, flashing beacons, cameras, signs, and other field equipment; including reviewing job site, investigation, safety concerns, materials and equipment needed.
  • Follows work order process and assignments to manufacture customized signs, utilizing specialized software and equipment, and/or by hand as needed, to assemble materials, equipment and supplies, and produce signs and installing according to instructions ensuring compliance with specifications.
  • Assists in setting up and maintaining temporary traffic controls based on established guidelines and safety practices.
  • Organizes workshop and supply area, maintaining a clean work environment.
  • Prepares documentation and general reports as needed, including inputting and reviewing information in work order system.
  • Operates and conducts maintenance of specialized equipment, which may also include snow removal equipment; and operates a vehicle in the performance of job duties.
  • Supports and responds to emergency operations, inclement weather, special events and other situations as needed and called.
  • Subject to be called back to work to the City in emergencies or as needed to provide necessary services to the public. Must have the ability to be contacted and respond based on Departmental guidelines.
  • Responsible for appropriate use and maintenance of City equipment, tools and other resources, including work time.
  • Regular and reliable attendance.

Other Duties

  • Performs additional duties to support operational requirements as apparent or assigned.
Education and Experience

Candidates may qualify by demonstrating the required knowledge and skills outlined for the job through experience(s) other than formal education.

  • High school diploma or GED AND some experience completing general work orders and routine equipment maintenance.

OR

  • 3 years of experience completing general work orders and routine equipment maintenance.

OR

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the specific requirements listed above.

Certifications/Licenses/Other Requirements:

  • Must obtain and maintain a valid Virginia Driver’s License and acceptable driving record according to city criteria.
  • Must obtain and maintain a CDL with Tanker endorsement, within 6 months of hire.
  • IMSA Traffic Signal Technician Level I Certification within 6 months of hire or upon availability of training.
  • IMSA Signs and Pavement Markings Technician Level I Certification within 6 months of hire or upon availability of training.
  • Obtain and maintain Work Zone Traffic Control (WZTC) Safety-Basic level certification within 3 months of hire or upon availability of training.
  • Required to successfully pass a pre-employment background check, physical, and drug test.
  • Position is subject to DOT drug and alcohol testing regulations upon receiving CDL.
