The Facilities Management department at the University of Virginia is seeking a motivated individual for an exciting and unique opportunity to join their Elevator team. The Elevator Assistant Mechanic is a role designed to develop credentialed Elevator Mechanics through on‑the‑job training and formal curriculum. Elevator Assistant Mechanics receive guidance and hands‑on training from experienced Mechanics, supporting the repair and maintenance of electrical and mechanical equipment related to elevators, dumbwaiters, wheelchair lifts, and other hydraulic or electric lift devices.

They assist Elevator Mechanics on all elevator equipment at the University and UVA Health per established standards while learning the trade. Assistants work under direct supervision and must demonstrate increasing independence. Incumbents will comply with OSHA, federal, state, and local regulations to support safe vertical transportation of students, staff, patients, and visitors throughout the University.

The Elevator Assistant Mechanic is expected to complete the four‑year CET Training Curriculum provided by the department, which combines on‑the‑job training with 12 courses of home‑based study. Interim milestones for demonstrable progress on skill development will also be provided. Continued employment as an Elevator Assistant Mechanic is contingent upon meeting those milestones, completing all assigned or required training modules, and passing the CET examination within five years of starting employment.

The program is facilitated by career professionals dedicated to developing skilled technicians and industry leaders.

The Elevator team is part of Facilities Management (FM), which supports the University of Virginia’s wide range of research, academic, and patient care programs. With approximately 1,200 employees dedicated to excellence, FM is responsible for the day‑to‑day operation, repair, and maintenance of UVA’s buildings, infrastructure, and grounds, as well as other University‑owned and leased properties.

Duties
  • Provide basic preventive maintenance, service, and troubleshooting of elevator equipment.
  • Perform repair work and follow‑up inspections.
  • Conduct inspections and safety tests.
  • Assist in emergency response calls under the guidance of an elevator mechanic, which may require removal of passengers from disabled elevators.
  • Other duties may be assigned as necessary.
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two years of experience in construction or a maintenance field, or completion of a two‑year construction‑related accredited vocational education program.
  • Valid driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Four years of experience in construction or a maintenance field.
  • Journey‑level license in Electrical.
  • Experience working in the elevator trade.
Compensation

The anticipated hiring range for this position is $25.00 – $30.00 per hour ($52,000 – $62,400 annually), commensurate with the successful candidate’s ability to meet preferred qualifications. This is a full‑time position with UVA benefits. Employee benefits include:

Physical Demands

Employee will be required to crawl, kneel, squat, bend, and twist to perform their work, work with materials of different weights, and perform repetitive motions. Must be comfortable climbing ladders and working from extreme heights. The employee must have normal vision and hearing (correctable), and, for some areas of employment, color vision and sense of smell.
