Salary: $22.27 to $26.72 Hourly
This advanced level mechanic position works independently to perform advanced skilled work in servicing, repair and maintenance of school facilities and associated equipment. Requires advanced knowledge in at least one building trade and general maintenance skills. Shift work and on‑call 24/7 for emergencies may be required. Supervision may be exercised over less skilled workers.
Essential Functions- Performs advanced skilled work in one or more specialties, such as electrical, plumbing, HVAC or carpentry.
- Assists in troubleshooting, repair and maintenance of facility equipment and systems.
- Repairs windows and doors, builds shelves and partitions.
- Replaces locks, door closures and screens.
- Installs and repairs plumbing lines and fixtures.
- Establishes safe practices for school staff and other employees.
- Provides cost estimations for repairs, installation and general maintenance services.
- Responds to heating and cooling service requests and repairs HVAC systems and refrigeration equipment.
- Adheres to safety standards per Department's safety manual.
- Performs related tasks as required.
Skills and Abilities
Must possess a working knowledge of general building maintenance methods, materials, tools and equipment; thorough knowledge of applicable code requirements, occupational hazards and safety precautions; ability to use test meters, read complex building drawings and specifications, and research parts and materials; ability to communicate orally and in writing; comprehensive understanding of contract documents; familiarity with Microsoft Outlook and blueprints; thorough knowledge of building systems (water, sewer, electrical, HVAC, sprinkler and alarm systems, computer monitoring system);
advanced knowledge of one building trade.
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of high school and five (5) years in Building Services, satisfactory completion of the 4th year of CATEC, an approved Apprenticeship Program, or any equivalent combination providing required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Physical Conditions and Nature of WorkFrequent walking, lifting up to 50 lbs, working from ladders, in cramped spaces, dusty conditions and inclement weather. Regular contact with office personnel, vendors and the public. Exposure to potential major injuries and hazardous substances. Requires dexterity, hand‑eye coordination and manual mechanical skills.
Special RequirementsDrug screening and tuberculin test required. Must possess a valid Virginia driver’s license and a commercial driver’s license within six months of employment.
