Position: Vehicle & Equipment Technician III (Public Works)

Public Works Vehicle & Equipment Technician III performs highly skilled, advanced, and complex technical work in the inspection, maintenance, and repair of diesel‑powered heavy construction equipment, automotive equipment, City vehicles, school buses, and related machinery. Serves as a senior technician, mentoring lower‑level technicians and providing instruction and advice. The work is performed under general supervision and reports to the Fleet Maintenance Supervisor.

Pay

Range

$26.81 – $34.34 an hour ($55,764.80 – $71,427.20 annually).

Job Overview

Perform advanced diagnostics, complex adjustments, and advanced repairs, overhauls, and services on heavy diesel‑powered construction equipment, automotive equipment, City vehicles, and school buses. Remove, break down, and rebuild components and assemblies including engines, multi‑speed transmissions, electrical systems, air conditioning systems, hydraulic systems, and power trains. Carry out scheduled preventative maintenance such as changing oil, checking fluid levels, cleaning and lubricating parts, and rotating tires.

Responsibilities
  • Operate shop equipment, machinery, precision instruments, specialized tools, and devices.
  • Operate a City vehicle in the performance of job duties, including test driving vehicles.
  • Inspect vehicles for compliance with safety and emission control standards.
  • Read and interpret diagnostic test results to identify mechanical problems.
  • Use appropriate checklists to ensure that all critical parts are examined.
  • Identify parts and develop corrective procedures.
  • Collaborate with manufacturer and service representatives to discuss technical vehicle and equipment problems and ensure compliance with contract specifications.
  • Recommend when a major component or assembly should be repaired, rebuilt, or discarded.
  • Read and interpret technical manuals, service/recall bulletins, investigate, and prepare service bulletins for fleet defect reports; conduct associated training.
  • Inspect and monitor work areas, examine tools and shop equipment, and assist in safety training to prevent, detect, and correct unsafe conditions or violations of procedures and safety rules.
  • Maintain and follow procedures for recording data and notes within the department’s work order system regarding inspections, test results, work performed, and parts used.
  • Provide technical advice and assistance on difficult and complex work.
  • Mentor, assist, and provide technical instruction to other technicians in diagnosis, tool use, and repair work.
  • Follow safety instructions and attend appropriate safety training.
  • Maintain cleanliness and order of garage shop space, tire bay, and fuel stations.
  • Inspect and maintain fuel stations, performing repairs and preventative maintenance as needed.
  • Respond to road calls and emergency road repairs/tire repairs.
  • Serve as lead in supervisor’s absence.
  • Use City equipment, tools, and other resources responsibly, including work time.
  • Provide regular and reliable attendance.
  • Be available for calls to work in emergencies, inclement weather, special events, or other necessary services to the public.
Other Duties
  • Perform additional duties to support operational requirements as assigned.
Education and Experience
  • Technical or trade school in automotive maintenance AND three (3) years of work experience in complex problem diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of light, medium, heavy, and automotive/specialized equipment.
  • High school diploma or GED AND five (5) years of work experience in the same area.
