General Maintenance Worker II:
Grounds Crew - Building Services
Albemarle County Public Schools Building Services – Charlottesville, Virginia
General Definition of WorkIndependently performs routine semi-skilled work in the repair and maintenance of county school buildings, grounds and equipment. This includes related work as required. Shift work may be required. Maintains acceptable attendance and safety standards in accordance with Albemarle County guidelines. The position is designated as "Essential Personnel," requiring employees to report to their job site during emergency situations (e.g., snow, inclement weather).
EssentialFunctions
- Performs painting and minor electrical, carpentry, plumbing, mechanical and related repairs and installations.
- Directs assigned personnel.
- Replaces HVAC filters.
- Operates trucks, towing equipment, tractors, mowers, snow equipment, etc.
- Uses standard tools and equipment of the trades.
- Cleans and cares for tools and equipment.
- Performs general maintenance and/or custodial work.
- Assists with layout and lining of athletic fields.
- Performs other tasks as required.
Skills and Abilities
General knowledge of the materials, equipment, tools and techniques of three or more of the standard building or mechanical trades; ability to supervise other employees; ability to learn the methods and techniques of a standard trade within a reasonable time period; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; and skill in the use of tools and equipment of a standard trade to perform basic skilled tasks.
Education and ExperienceHigh school graduation or equivalent combination of education and experience in one or more standard building trades. Special requirements: drug screening and tuberculin test required. Possession of a valid driver's permit and ability to obtain within six months an appropriate commercial driver’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Physical Conditions and Nature of Work ContactsPerformance of strenuous physical tasks such as walking over rough or uneven surfaces; bending or stooping; working in confined spaces; lifting or carrying items weighing 20–50 pounds, with occasional lifting over 100 pounds; working in inclement weather and conditions. Occasional exposure to toxic chemicals is required. Operation of complex gasoline, diesel or electric-powered machinery or shop equipment is required. Regular contacts with internal units, outside organizations and the public.
EvaluationPerformance will be evaluated on the ability and effectiveness in carrying out the above responsibilities.
Salary$19.50 to $23.40 per hour.
