The National Radio Astronomy Observatory seeks an Embedded Software FPGA Design Engineer to develop and optimize FPGA-based embedded systems for advanced radio telescopes in a research-focused telecom environment. In this role, you will architect, code, simulate, and validate FPGA/RTL designs in VHDL/Verilog, integrate embedded C/C++ on SoC platforms, and implement real-time control and data paths for high-speed signal processing. You will collaborate closely with scientists, RF engineers, and software teams, conduct lab testing and debug, and support deployment at observatory sites, contributing directly to cutting-edge astronomical discovery.
Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and maintain FPGA/RTL logic for radio astronomy instruments using VHDL/Verilog
- Develop embedded C/C++ software for So
- C and microcontroller platforms used in telescope control and data paths
- Integrate and optimize real-time embedded systems for high-speed digital signal processing and instrument control
- Perform simulation, verification, and timing closure for complex FPGA designs
- Collaborate with scientists, RF engineers, and software teams to translate scientific requirements into technical specifications
- Conduct lab testing, debugging, and validation using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and related tools
- Document designs, interfaces, and test procedures following observatory and industry standards
- Support deployment, troubleshooting, and lifecycle maintenance of systems at observatory sites
- Contribute to continuous improvement of engineering practices, tools, and workflows in a research-focused environment
