General Definition of Work

As Assistant Director of Transportation, leads safety planning for a complex system of pupil transportation services, to include home-to-school transportation, field and athletic trips, and all supplementary services supporting the Division. Responsible for direct supervision and management oversight of designated Transportation office staff functions and personnel, to include special needs transportation and equipment planning and training, and all transportation school bus drivers, van drivers, and assistants.

Responsible for analyzing demand for all pupil transportation services and developing solutions (routes, drivers, vehicles) to meet Division efficiency and effectiveness goals. Conducts transportation analysis and develops reports for the Director, Superintendent, School Board, and Virginia Department of Education. Provides leadership and management for the Transportation Program Manager – Special Needs, and the Area Transportation Supervisors.

Essential Functions
  • Leads the safety implementation and planning for a complex system of pupil transportation services, to include home‑to‑school transportation, field and athletic trips, and all supplementary services supporting the Division (pre‑ and post‑school activities, work‑study, inter‑school shuttles, etc.); this includes responsibility for leading the Safety Committee and ensuring all crash reports are complete and investigated;
  • Fosters a positive workplace culture by managing employee relations, mediating disputes, and overseeing disciplinary procedures in the driving staff;
  • Trains, supervises, and evaluates subordinates; recommends routes and vehicle recommendations for efficient and effective pupil transportation, to include the primary home‑to‑school mission and all supplementary programs (pre‑and post‑school activities, work‑study, inter‑school shuttles, etc.);
  • Works with the Director in the implementation of Continuous Quality Improvement programs across all Transportation Services;
  • Works with the Director to lead Department public affairs and strategic communications efforts within the community, the Division, and the Transportation Department;
  • Coordinates, as required, within Division to maintain pupil data required for transportation planning, to include requirements for special education pupils;
  • Coordinates with other staff to ensure the training of all school bus drivers ensures the compliance with all State DOE and Federal regulations (for all regular and special education training);
  • Supervises the professional training of drivers and staff (for all positions and all regular and special education training);
  • Evaluates road conditions and makes recommendations regarding school closings due to weather and emergencies;
  • Provides indirect supervision of all lead drivers, school bus drivers, van drivers, special education school bus drivers and assistants;
  • Leads, trains, motivates, and listens to department staff and provides guidance, direction, consultation, and assistance as needed;
  • Evaluates and improves school bus service through personal observation; conferences with drivers and Area Transportation Supervisors, school administrators, and parents;
  • Oversees a transportation safety program and ensures the safety standards are implemented;
  • Performs other tasks as assigned.
