University Transit Service (UTS) at the UVA Department of Parking and Transportation is seeking reliable Transit Bus Drivers. Our drivers work within UTS to provide transportation services to the UVA community. Strong customer service skills are necessary. Duties include operating a transit bus unit on a fixed route as well as transit operation in support of University-wide events. Selected candidates will be required to drive any/all buses and support vehicles in the fleet.

Work

Schedule

UTS and Parking & Transportation have services that operate 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. This requires all employees to have flexibility with scheduling. New hires will be expected to work any and all shifts, as assigned. Shift assignments are determined primarily by seniority scheduling, meaning successful candidates should expect to be regularly assigned to evening, night, and weekend hours, depending on service level, until seniority is built.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • At least 8 months of prior work experience required. Experience gained during part‑time work as a student may be considered.
  • Virginia Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Type A or B with Passenger and Air Brake endorsements or a valid State of Virginia Driver's License with the ability to obtain the CDL with endorsements within the first 45 days of hire. Requires a positive point balance via a good driving record on existing license.
  • Ability to follow and enforce specific instructions and communicate effectively with the public and via two‑way radio. Applicants must be able to read, write, and speak in English.
  • General knowledge of computer usage; ability to type, use email, and interface with web‑based systems for payroll and performance management is essential.
  • Safe operation of a transit bus requires sustained sitting, driving, pushing/pulling (steering wheel, various controls), repetitive motion, use of both hands, fine finger manipulation, and wrist movement. Also requires repeated use of both ankles/feet, strength and dexterity to depress the service brake and accelerator (right) and turn‑signal controls (left).
  • Ability to drive any/all buses in the UTS transit fleet and UTS support vehicles.
  • Availability and ability to work overtime and shifts over 8 hours when needed.
  • Ability to accept a flexible work schedule, including evening, night, and weekend hours.
Compensation
  • Starting pay $23.25 per hour for drivers requiring any or all components of CDL training and $25.00 per hour for drivers holding a CDL Class A or B with Air Brakes and the Passengers endorsement.
  • Predetermined shift differential, depending on hours and days worked, is applied on top of hourly base pay.

This is a full‑time non‑exempt position with UVA benefits. Employee benefits package highlights include: 22 days of paid time off, increasing with service; 13+ paid holidays each year, in addition to paid time off; parental and community service leave; health plan options; retirement through the Virginia Retirement System; tuition and professional development benefits; and an employee wellness program featuring activities to earn up to $500 per year.

Physical

Demands

Safe operation of a transit bus requires sustained sitting, driving, pushing/pulling, repetitive motion, use of both hands, fine finger manipulation, and wrist movement. Repetitive motion with both ankles/feet, strength and dexterity to depress the service brake and accelerator (right), and turn‑signal controls (left). Boarding/alighting the transit bus requires the ability to climb at least one step up or down. Adequate bending, lifting, and carrying are required for successful operation of ADA Accessible equipment aboard the transit bus.

Work performed during special events and equipment servicing requires standing, traveling, and the potential for bending, lifting, and carrying.
