Transit Safety, Security, and Training Coordinator performs responsible administrative work coordinating all Safety, Training, and Security Management programs of Charlottesville Area Transit (CAT). Investigates vehicle accidents and passenger incidents, arranges and schedules training or retraining opportunities (internal or external), and ensures CAT’s compliance with all federal, state and local safe operating guidelines and codes. Work is performed under limited supervision and reports to the Director of Transit.
WorkSchedule
The anticipated work schedule for this position is Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required. This position is also subject to emergency call‑back and may be required to work outside of normal business hours to provide essential services to the public. Work schedule is subject to change based on operational need.
The preferred hiring amount for this position is between $75,296.00 - $92,206.40 annually. Starting offer is based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity. - Choice of retirement plan:
- Defined Benefit Pension Plan: Provides a monthly benefit upon retirement, calculated using a defined formula based on earnings history, years of service, and age. The plan includes a 5‑year vesting period and requires an employee contribution of 5% of salary.
- Defined Contribution 401a Plan: Employer makes fixed contributions to an individual account, which are invested, and returns are credited to the account. Vesting occurs at 33% after one year, 67% after two years, and 100% after three years of service. No salary contribution is required.

The City of Charlottesville manages its own retirement system and does not participate in VRS; however, a Portability Agreement is available for eligible employees.
Responsibilities- In coordination with the Assistant Director of Transit (Operations), oversee all staff training including the planning, assignment, evaluation, and scheduling of safety and training programs in accordance with regulations from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), Department of Transportation (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), and other applicable agencies.
- Serve as the Federal Transportation Administration (FTA) drug and alcohol program manager.
- Enforce department safety and work procedures to ensure workplace safety practices are being adhered to at all times. Train employees in work procedures, job safety, and the recognition and elimination of hazards.
- Pursue a safety culture that pervades all areas of operation, with a heavy emphasis on risk mitigation and accident prevention. Identify safety issues in transit facilities, on transit equipment, at transit stops, and in transit routing.
- Interpret and recommend actions to implement and enforce city, state and federal safety rules, regulations and procedures.
- Conduct safety audits through observation, on‑board ride checks, and facilities inspections.
- Participate in, and serve as a member of, the city’s safety and accident review committee; participate in other related internal and external meetings and committees as required.
- Provide comprehensive technical advice and assistance with accuracy of accident/incident reporting and with current or new applicable laws and regulations.
- Assist drivers and managers in preparing accident/incident reports, prepare OSHA reports, and safety violation and compliance documents.
- Assist with development and implementation of written policies and procedures to ensure these are consistent with training programs and safety standards.
