Substitute School Bus Driver – Albemarle County Public Schools

Starting Date: Immediately

Position Type: Part-Time, As Needed

Salary: $21.45 to $35.38 per hour (Substitute Driver Pay Scale based on related CDL experience)

Responsibilities
  • Operate a school bus over long distances across interstate and state primary roads at sustained legally allowed speeds, fostering a safe image to the public.
  • Conduct safe and orderly loading and unloading of students at specified stops.
  • Maintain order and discipline on the bus.
  • Attend pre-service and in-service meetings pertaining to the job.
  • Perform routine operator care including washing the bus, sweeping interior, checking equipment and reporting defects, and presenting the bus for scheduled maintenance.
  • Accomplish and submit daily mileage reports and bus conduct reports as required.
  • Immediately report all accidents to a Driver Supervisor.
  • Install tire chains as required.
  • Carry out related duties as required.
Qualifications
  • High school graduation or equivalent education/experience.
  • Health condition satisfactory per competent medical authority.
  • Ability to complete Virginia Education Department training curriculum for school bus drivers and obtain a Commercial Driver’s License with appropriate school bus endorsements within the probationary period.
  • Complete State and County requirements of twenty hours of classroom and twenty hours of behind‑the‑wheel instruction.
  • No reckless driving or DUI convictions within five years and fewer than two moving violations within 12 months of employment.
  • English language proficiency required per Code of Virginia 46.2‑341.14.
Physical Requirements and Work Conditions

Work is typically performed inside and around the exterior of a school bus. Frequent bending, stooping, crawling, climbing and inspection are required. Occasional lifting of at least fifty pounds is required. Frequent contacts with driver supervisors, students, principals, parents, and the general public are required. Physical ability needed to operate bus controls: open/close service door (up to 25 psi exerted by right hand/arm), activate clutch pedal (up to 70 psi exerted by left foot/leg), operate manual transmission shift lever (up to 20 psi exerted by right hand/arm), jump/climb up to at least 3.5 feet at the emergency door for evacuation.

Occasional operation during inclement weather is required.
