Overview
The Outdoor Recreation Instructor will assist with the implementation of outdoor education programs, special events, equipment rentals and day camps at public parks throughout Carver County and nearby communities. Activities include kayaking, canoeing, archery, stand up paddle boarding, geocaching, outdoor cooking, fishing, disc golf, snow shoeing, cross country skiing and other outdoor related classes. This is a seasonal non‑exempt position; there is no guarantee of continual hours or future employment, nor County benefits, except as mandated by state and federal law.
Employment will not extend beyond November 20th. This is a safety‑sensitive position.
- Level 1:
Assistant Recreation InstructorAssistant Recreation Instructors will support lead staff through equipment set up, behavior management, program logistics, waiver collection, participant check‑in and may occasionally be asked to lead introductory programming. Assistant Recreation Instructors will conduct equipment rental transactions, park users counts and assist with equipment upkeep. Pay Range is $15-$19 per hour.
- Level 2:
Recreation InstructorIn addition to Level 1 requirements, Recreation Instructors will instruct recreation programs, manage recreation equipment, coordinate support staff, organize program logistics and be responsible for all aspects of facilitating recreation programs as guided by their supervisor. This includes driving county vehicles and pulling equipment trailers. Pay Range is $16.00-$21.00 per hour.
- Level 3:
Lead Recreation InstructorIn addition to the duties listed above, Lead Recreation Instructors will be responsible for the oversight of more significant programming such as day camps, special events, field trips, program development and staff coordination. Lead instructors are expected to have significant previous experience and the ability to take responsibility for programming with minimal oversight. This position may also assist in employee training, scheduling, equipment purchasing and other similar duties.
Pay Range is $21.00-$24.00 per hour.
- Assist park staff with scheduled park programs and special events.
- Assist Park Staff to develop a series of additional events or activities such as special events, outdoor education classes, day camps, parent/child activities and other related programs.
- Work with groups like the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, school groups and others to facilitate programs in the regional park.
- Develop advertising and registration materials for classes, programs and special events.
- Develop budgets for individual programs, classes and events.
- At least 16 years of age for Level 1; at least 18 years of age for Level 2 and Level 3.
- Available to work nights, weekends and holidays on a regular basis throughout employment.
- A valid Minnesota Class D Driver's License.
All applications will be screened for minimum qualifications, scored and ranked. The highest ranked candidates meeting minimum qualifications will be recommended for the scored oral examinations (interviews). Final selection for the position will include successful completion of oral interview(s), reference checks, and background investigation.
