Director of Nursing, Healthcare Nursing
Purpose of Job
This position is responsible for providing leadership for the delivery of safe, effective, and efficient nursing care in accordance with the Standards of Nursing Care and Practice as defined by Ridgeview Medical Center, the Minnesota Nurse Practice Act and the American Nurses Association Standards of Clinical Nursing Practice. Assumes 24-hour responsibility and accountability for managing the intraoperative unit of the Ridgeview Orthopedic Institute, including personnel, budget, organization, and development of the units.
JobFunctions
- Provides leadership and oversight of the nursing unit; supports the department director through development of programs, goals and objectives consistent with the organization’s strategic plan and initiatives.
- Manages staff resources by recruiting, selecting, hiring and orienting qualified individuals; evaluates staff performance accurately, consistently and timely; develops core hiring strategies and ensures opportunities for professional development.
- Manages operating expenses and key indicators within the unit budget; supports the department director in quality improvement efforts and service delivery that contributes to overall success and financial viability of the unit.
- Reviews and monitors applicable policies and procedures; ensures compliance with local, state and federal regulatory standards.
- Maintains clinical competencies and knowledge in accord with the scope and responsibility of the position.
- Participates on organizational and medical staff committees; serves as a professional resource for physicians, clinicians and leadership; collaborates with physicians and clinicians regarding programs and services; represents Ridgeview Medical Center in community outreach.
- Proactively identifies and acts upon improvement projects and opportunities through observation, data analysis, engagement with partners, review of external impact factors and best practices, and ongoing communication with leadership and staff.
- Manages and coordinates the daily activities of responsible units and supports the Sterile Processing Department to ensure efficient and effective operations; demonstrates adaptability and flexibility in adjusting to new and changing priorities and work situations.
- Holds staff accountable for utilizing the nursing process in the provision of nursing care; ensures personal and professional development and promotes growth of others.
- Plans, develops, monitors, and maintains the annual capital equipment budget for the unit.
- Establishes, monitors, and enforces standards for department risk management, safety and security in accordance with RMC safety/Risk Management Committee.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing.
- 3–5 years of recent and relevant OR experience.
- Demonstrate critical thinking and decision making.
- Maintain required background checks aligned with position functions.
- Communicate effectively in English for written and verbal correspondence.
- Make independent decisions using good critical thinking and problem‑solving skills.
- Work and multi‑task in a high‑stress, fast‑paced environment.
- Respond appropriately to unpredictable situations and diverse patient populations.
- Current professional nurse licensure in Minnesota or a permit from the Minnesota Board of Nursing while the license application is in process.
- BLS certification.
- Master’s Degree preferred.
- Certification in perioperative/perianesthesia nursing (e.g., CNOR, CSSM, CNAMB, CFPN, CPAN, CAPA) or willingness to acquire within 12 months of hire.
- Experience as Orthopedic Team/Service Line Lead, Surgery Unit Lead, Assistant Nurse Manager/Supervisor, or Nurse Manager (minimum two years full time).
Many factors are considered when determining compensation, such as position requirements, experience, education, knowledge, and skills, along with location and internal equity. Pay listed does not include any shift, weekend, or other differentials.
