Job Summary2nds in Building Materials is seeking a well‑rounded, detail‑oriented and reliable Staff Accountant to join our finance team. The Staff Accountant will support the day‑to‑day accounting operations by maintaining accurate financial records, performing reconciliations, assisting with financial reporting, and contributing to the month‑end and year‑end close processes. This role is ideal for a motivated accounting professional who thrives in a collaborative environment and is committed to accuracy, compliance, and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities- Prepare, review, and post journal entries to ensure timely and accurate recording of financial transactions
- Review and analyze daily cash reconciliation for 11 retail locations
- Perform monthly account reconciliations, including bank statements, credit cards, prepaid expenses, fixed assets, accruals, and other general ledger accounts
- Assist in the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements (balance sheets, income statements, cash flow statements) in accordance with GAAP (or relevant standards)
- Support the month‑end and year‑end close processes, including preparing schedules, analyzing variances, and resolving discrepancies
- Maintain and update the general ledger and sub‑ledgers
- Reconcile intercompany transactions (if applicable) and track fixed assets / depreciation schedules
- Assist with budget preparation, variance analysis, and forecasting as needed
- Assist in preparation of supporting documentation for internal and external audits
- Ensure compliance with company policies, internal controls, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations
- Assist treasurer and other corporate team members on special projects as needed
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business or a related field
- 2–5 years of progressive accounting or bookkeeping experience (staff accountant, junior accountant, or equivalent role)
- Experience with full-cycle accounting and month‑end close processes
- Prior experience in retail, banking, or warehouse environment (preferred)
- Strong working knowledge of GAAP
- Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., Quick Books, Net Suite, SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics, or similar ERP systems)
- Excellent analytical, problem‑solving, and attention‑to‑detail abilities
- Strong organizational and time‑management skills with the ability to meet deadlines
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- High degree of integrity and professionalism when handling confidential financial information
- Team player who can work independently and collaboratively
- Experience with HR related tasks, worker’s comp, and HRIS support is a plus
- Working knowledge of sales tax, AP, AR, or payroll accounting is a plus
