Staff Crew Leader – Fall USFS Region 8 Trail Crew

Reports to: Program Coordinator, Program Director

Locations: Crew will be based out of Chattanooga, TN but will be camping and working in various National Forests across the southeast region.

Season Dates: 8/12/24-11/22/24

Status: Seasonal, Full-time, Exempt

Wages: $720-800/week DOE, paid biweekly

Crew Structure

2 crew leaders, 8 crew members.

Position Summary

The Crew Leader performs numerous roles, providing leadership, technical guidance, and program management. Responsibilities include mentoring crew members, managing project work, ensuring safety, coordinating logistics, and maintaining documentation. Crew Leaders must be resourceful, mature, professional, and able to thrive in outdoor environments.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead, supervise, and motivate a crew of young adults to complete conservation projects efficiently on public lands.
  • Implement skills training, facilitate intentional discussions, and promote individual growth.
  • Manage on‑ground quality and quantity of project work and resolve issues.
  • Coordinate logistics with project partners and SECC staff.
  • Ensure compliance with all SECC policies, including substance‑free workplace, health and safety policies, and COVID‑19 procedures.
  • Document project accomplishments, timesheets, reports, evaluations, and incident reports.
  • Manage food budget and credit card purchases, including receipt reconciliation.
  • Maintain crew safety and emotional well‑being through situational awareness and risk management.
  • Transport crew and equipment safely in SECC vehicles.
  • Adapt to fluid, changing work environments and variable hitch schedules.
Qualifications
  • 1–2 years’ experience with SECC, other conservation corps, or youth corps.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Willingness to commit fully to the program and its mission.
  • Leadership experience with youth or young adults.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Strong project, time‑management, and independent work skills.
  • Physical fitness to work long days in adverse conditions.
  • Experience with backpacking, wilderness living, travel, and Leave No Trace principles.
  • Current and relevant certification in Wilderness Medicine (WFA, WAFA, WFR) with CPR/AED.
  • Willingness to deploy on a Disaster Response.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Background with experiential and/or environmental education.
  • Relevant Bachelor’s degree.
  • Facilitation and team‑building experience with diverse groups of people.
  • Forest Service chainsaw certifications.
  • Strong conflict resolution skills.
  • Experience with Disaster Response.
  • Sense of humor, spirit of adventure, and desire to make a positive difference.
Physical and Functional Requirements
  • Frequent walking, hiking, sitting, and using hands to operate tools.
  • Regularly lift or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision ability for close work and focus.
  • Drive SECC vehicle.
  • Speak, understand, read, and write English.
  • Pass Conservation Legacy criminal history checks.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  • Ability to self‑medicate medications if take prescription drugs.
