Job OverviewThe Tennessee Department of Health is seeking a Medical Director for Prescribing Matters. This executive service position reports directly to the Assistant Commissioner of Health Licensure and Regulation.
Key Responsibilities- Review all complaints filed against licensees involving the inappropriate prescribing of controlled substances.
- Make threshold determinations on violations; advise board investigators in conjunction with the Office of General Counsel.
- Perform detailed review of medical charts.
- Consult with the Office of General Counsel in issuing positions on appropriate disciplinary parameters.
- Handle initial pain clinic licensure and renewals.
- Assist the Controlled Substance Monitoring Database (CSMD) Committee in utilizing CSMD information to comply with legislative mandates to identify prescribers with inappropriate prescribing practices.
- Interact with the Board of Medical Examiners, Board of Nursing, Board of Pharmacy, and other applicable boards concerning prescribing, and work with the Office of General Counsel to advise on promulgation of rules.
- Collaborate with other state departments regarding the misuse of controlled substances and conduct literature reviews/research to inform policy relative to prescribing.
- Supervise the APRN prescribing consultant and the pain clinic licensure team.
- Licensed and practicing for at least 5 years as a medical doctor or osteopathic physician in Tennessee.
- Experience in prescribing controlled substances.
- Certified Addiction Specialist (preferred).
- Certified Pain Management Specialist (preferred).
