Work Hours: Monday – Saturday, 9:00 A.M. – 6:00 P.M. (EST)
Note: Hours may vary due to work assignments or projects.

Summary:

Incumbents are responsible for representing the Public Library by applying specialized knowledge to provide excellent internal or external customer service in assisting patrons or executing library operations.

Series Level: Library Services Specialist is a stand‑alone position.

Essential Functions
  • Delivers consistently excellent customer service while supporting the library mission.
  • Displays professional acumen by being knowledgeable about library industry practices, services, and patron‑facing consumer and prosumer hardware, software, and other technology.
  • Internalizes the mission by self‑educating in professional development and skills.
  • Advances the mission using common sense and critical thinking to achieve goals while amplifying team coherence.
  • Proposes improvements to library operations and services.
  • May serve as designated shift leader to coach and motivate staff, upholding a culture of exceptional customer experience.
  • Cross‑trains in all library departments.
  • Enforces policies and procedures while balancing patron needs with administrative requirements.
  • Proposes, develops, promotes, implements, administers, and evaluates specialty programs and services; relates materials and displays to promote the library.
  • May process forms for passport applications and operate as Notary Public.
  • Operates devices and machines in library operations, including postage processing and food service equipment.
  • Participates in operation‑wide inventory management.
  • Assists patrons with informational requests and evaluates resources to match needs with reference materials.
  • Performs circulation desk activities including checkout, renewal, issuing cards, and collecting fines.
  • Processes inter‑library loans, manages, and maintains related databases.
  • Trains patrons on electronic reference sources and troubleshooting software/hardware.
  • Evaluates the informational utility of online sources for referral to patrons.
  • Plans, prepares, and maintains displays/exhibits to promote circulation.
  • Sorts, shelves, weeds, discards materials; empties book drop and processes returned items.
  • Recommends material purchases.
  • Ensures completeness and accuracy of bibliographic records.
  • Monitors and maintains databases in assigned area.
  • Prepares statistics related to library operations.
  • Understands performance metrics and seeks to improve them.
  • Participates in meetings, committees, and related groups to receive and convey information.
  • Travels to present programs and services; listens to feedback and takes action.
  • Provides basic direction and feedback to staff.
  • Prioritizes patrons and tasks with attention to detail; communicates effectively at all levels.
  • Considers impact of actions on individuals, teams, and the organization.
  • Actively participates in library safety program.
  • Promotes, collaborates with, and directs patrons to other public and community resources.
  • Performs regular cleaning of facilities: sanitizing surfaces, cleaning shelves, sanitizing children’s toys, vacuuming, and recycling.
  • Participates in Staff/Summer Picks program to select annual titles for inclusion.
  • Prepares daily cash register drawers, processes deposits and coin‑operated amounts, and performs other financial processes.
  • Meets regular attendance requirements.
  • Maintains good interpersonal relationships with staff, co‑workers, managers, and citizens.
  • Accomplishes essential functions with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • May be assigned or reassigned to any division within the department.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
When Working in the Collection Services Department
  • Answer online patron‑submitted requests for library material purchases.
  • Create and submit purchase orders to vendors.
  • Receive deliveries from USPS, UPS, Fed Ex.
  • Process invoices for purchased materials.
  • Ensure completeness and accuracy of bibliographic and item records via cataloging software.
