May 27 – August 5, Monday – Friday, 9:30 A.M. – 6:30 P.M.

Normal

Work Hours:

Monday – Friday, 11:00 A.M. – 8:00 P.M.;
Saturday, 11:30 A.M. – 4:00 P.M. (EST). Hours may vary due to assignments or projects.

Classification Summary

Incumbents represent the Chattanooga Public Library by applying specialized knowledge to provide excellent customer service and assist patrons or execute library operations. Work requires limited supervision.

Essential Functions
  • Deliver consistently excellent customer service while supporting the library mission.
  • Apply knowledge of library industry practices, services, and patron-facing technology.
  • Maintain professional development and skill improvement.
  • Propose improvements to library operations and services.
  • Act as shift leader when designated, coaching and motivating other staff.
  • Cross-train in all library departments.
  • Enforce policies and procedures while balancing patron needs.
  • Implement, administer, and evaluate specialty programs and services; promote materials and displays.
  • Process passport application forms and serve as Notary Public when required.
  • Operate devices and equipment, including postage processing and food service equipment.
  • Manage inventory and participate in operation-wide inventory management.
  • Assist patrons with informational requests and resource evaluation.
  • Perform circulation desk activities: checkout, renewal, card issuance, and fines.
  • Process inter‑library loans and manage related databases.
  • Train patrons in electronic reference sources and troubleshoot hardware/software issues.
  • Evaluate online sources for reference referrals; conduct research.
  • Prepare displays and exhibits to promote circulation.
  • Sort, shelve, weed, and process returned material.
  • Recommend material purchases.
  • Ensure bibliographic record accuracy.
  • Monitor and maintain databases in assigned areas.
  • Compile statistics related to library operations.
  • Participate in meetings, committees, and related groups.
  • Travel to present programs and services; gather feedback.
  • Provide basic direction to other employees.
  • Prioritize patrons and tasks and communicate effectively.
  • Participate in Library Safety Program.
  • Direct patrons to community resources.
  • Perform regular cleaning of building facilities.
  • Participate in Staff/Summer Picks program for annual title selection.
  • Manage financial processes: cash drawer preparation, deposits, coin-operated deposits.
  • Maintain attendance and interpersonal relationships.
  • Accomplish essential functions with or without accommodations.
  • May be assigned to various divisions within the department.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Specific Duties
  • Collection Services Department
    :
    Answer online patron purchase requests, submit purchase orders, process vendor deliveries and invoices, catalog entries, deprocess damaged materials, maintain inventory records, and prepare documentation for finance.
  • Makerspace
    :
    Demonstrate maker technology, train patrons, stay current with trends, and maintain equipment/software proficiency.
  • Local History Department
    :
    Digitize collections, generate metadata, support accessioning, processing, and cataloging.
  • Outreach Department
    :
    Operate City-designated vehicles, support off‑site programs, event tabling, and pop‑up library services; may work outside normal hours.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED and at least four years of relevant education, training, or experience.
  • Preferred: 1–2 years serving the public, working with children, ordering and cataloging materials, instructing makerspace equipment, creating and delivering library programming.
  • Must be qualified to become a passport agent within six months if required.
  • Driver's License may be required depending on assigned area.
