Position: Alternative Setting Teacher

Overview

The purpose of this classification is to provide high-quality instruction and support to students in both the local juvenile detention center and adult correctional facility. This role focuses on delivering engaging instruction, ensuring appropriate educational placements, coordinating schedules for additional instructional staff, and serving as a liaison between the district and correctional facilities. In alignment with the district’s commitment to informed, educational instruction to students based on a set curriculum provided by the district.

This position will teach one or more subjects to students and lead them toward the fulfillment of their potential for intellectual, emotional, social, and psychological growth and maturation.

  • Plans and develops course of study according to school district and state curriculum guidelines. Actual curriculum must often be tailored for three or more levels of academic ability and previous achievement.
  • Develops and presents lesson plans using various techniques such as lectures, projects, exhibits, field trips, audiovisual resources, and technology, aiming to make learning relevant.
  • Establishes clear learning targets and builds rigorous, aligned assessments following state standards and instructional best practices.
  • Tracks and analyzes student data to inform instructional decisions and support differentiated learning.
  • Reviews a variety of student assessment data to ensure continuous improvement in measurable student performance and achievement.
  • Prepares assignments and tests for in-school preparation and homework. Monitors, assists, corrects, and grades student performances.
  • Administers standardized tests in accordance with district policies and state law.
  • Maintains order in classroom, and in conjunction with administrative staff, administers discipline when necessary to achieve proper behavior. Manages student conduct and disciplinary issues in accordance with district, state, and federal guidelines, policies, and procedures.
  • Counsels students when academic difficulties or behavioral problems arise. Works with school counselor in helping students to achieve academically, emotionally, and socially.
  • Consults with professionals regarding learning disabilities, substance abuse, or social adjustment issues, and coordinates intervention decisions with parents. Maintains mandated reporting responsibilities for suspected abuse or neglect.
  • Recommends promotion and/or placement of students in appropriate classroom situation for ensuing year.
  • Communicates through the proper channels to keep appropriate personnel informed of impending problems or events of unusual nature.
  • Shares responsibility with teachers and paraprofessionals for monitoring halls, study periods, lunchroom, bus duty, assemblies, field trips, and extracurricular activities.
  • Maintains accurate records and reports of academic performance, attendance, interventions, and social acclimation. Reports on all aspects of student development for school records and parents; conducts parent-teacher conferences on both a regularly scheduled and as-needed basis.
  • Plans and coordinates events, field trips, and community activities, including guest speakers and student enrichment programs. Sponsors student organizations and supervises other activities as needed, such as athletic gate monitoring.
