The Company
Our client is a well established, employee owned engineering and construction services consultancy with a strong regional presence and an AASHTO accredited, USACE certified materials laboratory. The Chattanooga office delivers geotechnical, environmental and construction materials testing services across a broad portfolio of commercial, industrial, transportation and public infrastructure projects.
The RoleWe are seeking an experienced CMT Project Manager to lead the delivery of construction materials testing and special inspection programmes from proposal through closeout. This is a client facing leadership role, responsible for managing field and laboratory operations, protecting quality, safety and profitability, and mentoring technical staff.
Key Responsibilities- Manage the full CMT project lifecycle, including scoping, proposals, budgeting, scheduling, execution and closeout.
- Act as the primary client contact and build relationships that drive repeat and expanded work.
- Coordinate field testing and inspection activities, allocating technicians and equipment to meet project schedules.
- Oversee laboratory testing and ensure accurate, timely reporting.
- Review reports for technical accuracy and compliance with project specifications and ASTM, AASHTO and ACI standards.
- Ensure work meets the firm's quality system and the requirements of AASHTO accreditation and USACE certification.
- Manage project financials, including budgets, billing and margin.
- Champion health and safety across all field and laboratory work.
- Support business development through proposals, client engagement and industry representation.
- Train and mentor technicians, inspectors and junior project staff.
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Geology or a related field. Applicable experience may be considered in place of a degree.
- 5 to 7 years of experience in construction materials testing, special inspection or a related field, including project management responsibility.
- Strong knowledge of CMT methods and relevant ASTM, AASHTO and ACI standards for soils, concrete, asphalt, aggregate and masonry.
- Relevant certifications strongly preferred, for example ACI, NICET or state DOT credentials. PE licensure advantageous but not essential.
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects, budgets and field teams.
- Excellent client facing communication skills and a valid driver's licence.
