JOB SUMMARY
The Assistant Controller will assist the Controller of the Corporate Accounting Department and provide support where needed. The position will
serve in a leadership role within the department. This position will maintain a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality and provide assistance while coordinating all jobs assigned to the department. Responsibility will require substantial independent judgment. Strict adherence to EPB policies and procedures is required.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES- Assist the Controller in supervising, delegating, recognizing training needs, and directing the work assignments and schedules following policies, procedures, and departmental work rules.
- Assume the department's responsibility in the Controller's absence and perform other related duties as assigned.
- Maintain accurate documentation regarding employment, placement, attendance, work schedule, transfer, disciplinary action, and change in status or compensation of assigned personnel.
- Keep the Controller informed of department progress, attributes, problems, customer compliments and complaints, and trends concerning the department. Make recommendations for revisions or improvements as needed.
- Assist the Controller in creating a positive work environment by personally demonstrating appropriate knowledge, methods, and attitude. Assure that all assigned department employees are provided adequate training and motivation, and that continued emphasis is placed on achieving excellent customer service.
- Maintain expert knowledge of financial accounting requirements, such as GASB pronouncements, to ensure reported balances are properly reflected in the financial statements.
- Monitor EPB's business to gain insight/knowledge of business processes to identify potential issues and take actions to remedy these identified issues to ensure accurate financial data.
- Prepare financial reports for both internal and external requirements.
- Present independently developed financial analysis to Senior Management or the Board of Directors when needed.
- Work efficiently and accurately while performing tasks, designing formats and templates for department team members.
- Assist employees in getting daily processes completed on schedule. Instill a sense of urgency in the work group to complete work in a timely manner to meet scheduled deadlines.
- Establish and maintain good working relationships with other department personnel throughout EPB as they relate to the daily flow of financial information.
- Talk with other departments having questions/problems with their areas and make sensible adjustments as needed. The emphasis is working together as a team to meet customer/company needs in a timely and cost-effective manner.
- Monitor the performance of assigned Corporate Accounting department personnel through performance appraisals, cross-training, and counseling/coaching.
- Provide input to departmental leadership regarding employee performance and emerging issues that may require corrective action.
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- 7+ years of related experience and/or training.
- 5 years of experience in the Corporate Accounting Department or experience that is equivalent as determined by the department manager.
- Demonstrated ability to deal effectively and tactfully with difficult and/or unexpected situations. Ability to understand and appreciate employee and/or customer problems or requests and work cooperatively.
- Demonstrated proficiency in word processing skills using the standard EPB word processing application software; spreadsheet and charting skills using the standard EPB spreadsheet application software.
- Documented expert understanding of EPB accounting processes and external accounting standards from GASB, FASB, and FERC.
- Demonstrated expert ability to understand EPB's products, pricing structures, and rates that affect financial outcomes.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and process driven skills.
May perform other duties as assigned. All employees, pursuant to their job duties, should demonstrate the behaviors of Professional Empowerment and comply with all EPB policies, standards, and guidelines. EPB provides electric and communications services, which are considered critical infrastructure by the Department of Homeland Security. This EPB job is essential to support this critical infrastructure and may be required to work onsite or in the field to maintain these services.
