The Senior Statutory Accountant is responsible for GAAP and statutory accounting, reporting, and analysis related to the company’s investment portfolio. This role supports quarterly and annual close activities, prepares investment-related journal entries schedules and disclosures, ensures compliance with GAAP and statutory accounting principles and regulatory requirements, and partners closely with investment, finance, and audit stakeholders. The position will assist with all statutory filings and state reporting.

The ideal candidate brings strong technical accounting expertise, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in a deadline-driven environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare and review investment-related statutory GAAP and STAT journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules for monthly, quarterly, and annual close.
  • Compile and analyze investment data for GAAP and statutory financial statements, footnotes, and regulatory filings, including schedules related to bonds, equities, limited partnerships, and other invested assets.
  • Assist with preparation of NAIC and state regulatory reporting, including investment schedules, exhibits, and related disclosures.
  • Monitor compliance with Statutory Accounting Principles (SAP), NAIC guidance, and internal accounting policies applicable to invested assets.
  • Perform analysis of realized and unrealized gains and losses, investment income, impairments, valuation adjustments, and other investment accounting activities.
  • Complete all state filings for three insurance companies.
  • Assist with all statutory quarterly and annual statement schedules.
  • Partner with investment operations, treasury, actuarial, reinsurance, and financial reporting teams to ensure complete and accurate reporting.
  • Support external audits, internal audits, and regulatory examinations by preparing documentation, responding to inquiries, and maintaining strong audit trails.
  • Identify process improvement opportunities, strengthen internal controls, and support automation or system enhancement initiatives.
  • Review work prepared by junior team members and provide guidance on technical accounting and reporting matters as needed.
  • Research and document accounting conclusions for new investment structures, complex transactions, and changes in statutory reporting requirements.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
  • 5+ years of accounting or financial reporting experience, with strong exposure to statutory accounting and investment accounting.
  • Knowledge of Statutory Accounting Principles (SAP), NAIC reporting requirements, and investment-related statutory schedules and disclosures.
  • Strong understanding of fixed income, equity, alternative investments, and related accounting treatments.
  • CPA designation preferred.
  • Advanced Excel skills and experience with general ledger, reporting, or investment accounting systems.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet tight reporting deadlines.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical accounting matters to cross-functional partners.
Preferred Skills
  • Experience preparing or reviewing both GAAP and statutory investment schedules and footnotes.
  • Familiarity with Schedule D, Schedule BA, Schedule E and other insurance investment reporting concepts.
  • Knowledge of U.S. GAAP to statutory differences related to invested assets.
  • Experience with Black Rock, Clearwater, Bloomberg, SAP, Oracle, Workday, or similar financial systems.
  • Process improvement mindset with experience in documentation, controls, and automation.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across finance and investment teams.
