Under general supervision, serves summonses and other legal documents to initiate, advise, and require appearance in court to juveniles, family members, witnesses, victims, and other parties associated with cases coming before the court.

Performs a variety of law-enforcement-related tasks associated with service of court processes; searches and researches court files, public records, reports, and other media to determine potential and actual locations for persons to be served; contacts parties by phone and/or in person to provide time, date, location, and other information regarding court appearance; goes to work sites, homes, and other locations to personally serve court documents on appropriate parties.
Maintains and records proof of service and other documents related to service verification in individual cases; maintains records and logs of overall work duties and tasks performed; testifies in court as to validity of service, conditions found when serving process, and related issues; serves as a liaison between the court and various law enforcement and other governmental and non-governmental agencies.
Manages complex files and records; updates information and provides statistical data; fills out and maintains a variety of files and records; works a varied, non-traditional schedule that may include evenings, week‑ends, and/or holidays; participates in special assignments. Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE- State of Tennessee statutes, rules, administrative orders, operational policies and procedures, Federal rules, and requirements.
- Hamilton County policies and procedures.
- Legal terminology and court processes and procedures.
- Fundamental restraint, self‑defense, and related principles.
- Basic principles of record keeping, file and records maintenance.
- Report writing and presentation.
- Working under pressure in a highly dynamic environment with changing program demands and priorities.
- Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with court employees, other court and non‑court related agencies and representatives, juvenile offenders and/or referred youth, their families, and the public.
- Communicating effectively with a variety of people, organizations, and entities.
- Investigating, tracking, and locating persons receiving notice of court action.
- Self‑defense and defensive driving.
- Operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of software applications.
- Effectively communicating in both oral and written form.
Equivalent of a high school diploma and one (1) year of direct experience in law enforcement, juvenile justice, security, the military, or a juvenile court environment. Must possess a valid driver’s license.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTSPrior to operating a County‑owned vehicle, all employees are required to complete the HC Defensive Driving course and/or an Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) provided at the department level.
SAFETY SENSITIVEThis position has been identified as “safety sensitive” under the definition of TCA 50-9-103(16)(B), Drug‑free Workplace Programs, Chapter Definitions. This position will be subject to drug and alcohol testing for the following:
1) post‑offer pre‑employment
2) when there is reasonable cause
3) after an on‑the‑job accident or contributing to an accident
4) on a random basis
5) prior to return to duty after suspension and/or
6) as follow‑up. This is additional and also subject to the Rules and Regulations of the Employee Handbook.
