General DefinitionUnder direct supervision, patrols the unincorporated areas of Hamilton County in an assigned sector and district; answers service calls ranging from barking dogs to initial investigation of homicides; enforces law and regulations; investigates traffic accidents; and performs related duties as assigned.
Essential Functions- Patrol unincorporated areas of the County; answer service calls ranging from barking dogs to initial investigation of homicides
- Enforce laws and regulations; investigate traffic accidents and control the scene
- Conduct follow‑up investigations; locate wanted persons; make arrests; recover lost and stolen property
- Testify in criminal or civil proceedings; serve citizens of Hamilton County for protection of life and property; conduct special assignments
- Operate a patrol car for neighborhood and business watches; write reports; appear in court to testify as required
- Photograph traffic accident scenes; re‑contact victims to gather additional information
- Arrest offenders based on probable cause; maintain patrol vehicle including refueling and routine maintenance
- Observe radio communications while coordinating with dispatchers
- Reconstruct accident scenes; present findings to the District Attorney’s office for prosecution
- Provide proactive, highly visible law enforcement techniques to prevent accidents; safeguard life and property
- Process crimes coming into the jurisdiction of the Sheriff’s Office; serve as canine patrol officer providing training of canines
- Answer calls and conduct drug searches, fugitive tracking; answer domestic violence calls and assist in mediation
- Identify drunk or impaired drivers and effect arrests to remove them from highways; prepare for court presentation to assist prosecution
- Investigate traffic accidents; collect evidence and property from the scene; draw conclusions and assign responsibility; protect residents through law enforcement activities aimed at eliminating criminal elements
- High school diploma or GED
- POST certified as a law enforcement officer in good standing
- Three (3) years of full‑time POST certified law enforcement experience
- Pass a physical agility test administered by Human Resources and the department’s training division
- Knowledge of principles and practices of child psychology as used in assignment of School Resource Officer
- Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local statutes, ordinances, laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures
- Knowledge of available resources for providing youth with activities as an alternative to street activities
- Knowledge of psychological makeup of criminal perpetrators
- Knowledge of criminal activities and methods of operation
- Skill in maintaining personal and professional standards
- Skill in developing and maintaining effective relations within law enforcement community and throughout the county
- Skill in developing and maintaining manual and automated systems
- Skill in analyzing data and drawing meaningful conclusions
- Skill in developing information resources from informants
- Skill in maintaining proficiency through ongoing training and education
This classification involves work in a law enforcement environment including potential for physical harm to self or others in the line of duty. Other hazards include exposure to infectious diseases.
