Overview
The Software Engineer 2 role supports Unum’s Total Leave teams with deep expertise in Fineos and custom Fineos development—hands‑on configuration, Java‑based enhancements, and integration of Fineos components into Unum’s broader ecosystem. The engineer may also research and evaluate third‑party and cloud technologies to drive efficient integrations and modernize solution capabilities.
Responsibilities- Estimate, design, implement, and maintain new and existing features for the existing portfolio of applications for a business area.
- Complete complex feature development tasks independently.
- Communicate and collaborate with key stakeholders to deliver features.
- Design, code, configure, unit test, maintain, and document software deliverables using agreed standards and tools.
- Lead sizing and estimation activities within the agile team.
- Participate in code reviews, sprint retrospectives, and continuous improvement activities.
- Ensure quality of features through manual and automated testing and use of continuous integration.
- Lead proof‑of‑concept work and prototyping when necessary.
- Collaborate with Business Analysts, UX designers, Test Engineers, and Technical Support Engineers to define requirements, establish definitions of done, and transition features to production.
- Automate testing to industry standards for high‑quality delivery and efficient regression.
- Maintain ALM tools and participate in daily stand‑ups to communicate progress and impediments.
- Think with the end customer’s perspective to improve the customer experience.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science preferred, or equivalent relevant business experience.
- 4+ years of demonstrated success in software development or equivalent experience.
- Strong Java development skills, including J2EE technologies (JSP, JMS) and integrations (Web Services, APIs).
- Experience with Fineos Admin Suite (Claims) configurations and Java customizations.
- Experience with relational databases (Oracle, MS SQL) and strong SQL query skills.
- Analytical and critical thinking skills with a logical, detail‑oriented approach to problem solving.
- Experience with Agile Development Methodologies.
- Self‑motivated, results‑oriented, and able to innovate in problem solving.
- Strong focus on quality delivery and customer satisfaction, holding themselves to high standards.
- Good oral and written communication skills and a strong team player.
Base salary range: $73,300.00–$. Unum offers a portfolio of competitive benefits including healthcare (health, vision, dental), insurance (short & long‑term disability), performance‑based incentive plans, paid time off, and a 401(k) retirement plan with an employer match up to 5% and an additional 4.5% contribution whether you contribute to the plan or not. All benefits are subject to the terms and conditions of the individual plans.
