Overview
This posting is for a 1.0 FTE English Language Arts/Social Studies Teacher OR English Language Arts Teacher at W.F.West High School for the 2026-27 school year. This position is open until filled. For best consideration, please apply by April 27, 2026.
Responsibilities- Center instruction on high expectations for student achievement.
- Provide clear and intentional focus on subject matter content and curriculum.
- Recognize individual student learning needs and develop strategies to address those needs.
- Assumes responsibility for implementing and teaching a specialized program in subject area.
- Teaches courses in subject area to secondary students utilizing course of study adopted by the Board of Directors and appropriate curriculum publications as guidelines in teaching individual course content.
- Instruct students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
- Use multiple student data elements to modify instruction and improve student learning.
- Establish rapport, communicate and collaborate with parents and the school community.
- Develop lesson plans and appropriate instructional aids stressing discovery and laboratory learning methods.
- Demonstrate subject area concepts using models, visual aids, and other instructional aids.
- Design learning activities that relate subject area to the physical world.
- Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment.
- Evaluate each student’s progress in subject area knowledge and skills.
- Demonstrate scientific concepts by use of scientific apparatus, experiments, and instructional aids.
- Exhibit collaborative and collegial practices focused on improving instructional practice and student learning.
- Foster and manage a safe, positive learning environment.
- Provide individual or small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to student needs and accommodate multiple projects and experiments.
- Select and requisition books, instructional aids, and instructional supplies; maintain inventory records.
- Communicate with school counselors to discuss the individual student’s progress.
- Identify student needs and cooperate with other professional staff in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
- Participate in curriculum and other developmental programs.
- Maintain professional competence through in-service education activities and professional growth.
- Perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Complete work at assigned workstation(s).
- Consistently deal with people in a courteous and professional manner.
- Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate with appropriate endorsement. Preferred candidate will have certification in both subject areas or willingness to obtain additional endorsement needed.
- Criminal Justice Fingerprint/background clearance.
- Skills to motivate students, communicate with individuals from varied educational and cultural backgrounds, direct support personnel, evaluate performance, demonstrate activities.
- Demonstrated knowledge of computers and computer applications; ability to integrate technology with classroom instruction.
- Demonstrated evidence of classroom management skills.
- Experience and/or training with cultural, ethnic and language diversity is preferred.
- Knowledge of age-appropriate teaching methods, state curriculum, benchmarks and framework, education code, and instructional subjects.
- Willingness to supervise/direct extracurricular activities.
- Willingness and ability to work cooperatively with administration and staff.
- Skills to promote learning, motivate students, communicate with diverse backgrounds, and evaluate performance.
- Knowledge of curriculum, education code, and district policies.
- Abilities to stand and walk for prolonged periods, perform a variety of tasks, maintain records, and establish cooperative relationships with students, parents, and staff.
