The Special Education Teacher facilitates Special Education student success in pre-academics/academics, social-emotional and interpersonal skills, and activities of functional daily living through implementing district approved curriculum; documenting instruction, as well as student progress/activities, and outcomes; addressing specific needs of students; providing a safe and optimal learning environment, and providing feedback to students, parents and administration regarding student progress expectations, goals, etc.
PerformanceResponsibilities
- Adapts lessons for the purpose of implementing IEP goals and meeting the special needs of students.
- Instructs students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
- Centers instruction on high expectations for student achievement.
- Provides clear and intentional focus on subject matter content and curriculum.
- Recognizes individual student learning needs and develops strategies to address those needs.
- Advices parents/guardians of student progress for the purpose of reporting growth toward IEP goals, supporting teacher's expectations, developing methods for improvement and/or reinforcing classroom goals in the home environment.
- Assesses students formally and informally, within his/her scope of practice, for the purpose of evaluating students’ placement and success of their IEPs (e.g. behavioral, social-emotional skills, motor development, functional communication, academics, developmental level, vocational abilities, etc.).
- Collaborates with school personnel, parents/guardians, and community agencies (e.g. social service agencies, caretakers, etc.) for the purpose of developing and modifying the program to maximize the quality of student outcomes, developing solutions and planning curriculum.
- Develops, monitors and evaluates specially designed instructional programs for the students on his/her caseload.
- Works cooperatively with general education teachers who have students who receive special education services in class to design, modify, and differentiate curriculum to meet the unique needs of students with IEPs, interpreting the abilities and disabilities of students to relevant staff, and assisting the student with regular class assignments.
- Supports expanded inclusive educational offerings for students who receive special education services, including cotaught settings where the planning, delivery, and assessment of instruction is completed in partnership with a general education teacher.
- Directs educational assistants, volunteers and/or student aides for the purpose of providing an effective school program and addressing the needs of individual students.
- Demonstrates effective teaching practices.
- Uses multiple student data elements to modify instruction, develop IEPs, and improve student learning.
- Instructs students with individualized special needs for the purpose of developing appropriate academic and interpersonal skills through a defined course of study.
- Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment.
- Provides individual or small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of students, and to accommodate circumstances where a variety of projects are being worked on simultaneously.
- Selects and requisitions books, instructional aids, and instructional supplies; maintains required inventory records.
- Communicates and collaborates with parents/guardians and the school community.
