Position: Chehalis- Temporary Ed Para Specialist- ASL Interpreter (Student Support) 2026-27

Temporary Educational Paraprofessional Specialist-ASL Interpreter

This position is for a Temporary Educational Paraprofessional Specialist-ASL Interpreter. The position is anticipated to be 6.0 hours per day 8:50am - 3:20pm. Position to end June 11, 2027 or the last day of school or if changes to student enrollment occur. This position is open until filled.

It is a one-on-one student specific position, as an American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter, and will assist (under direct supervision) in the supervision and instruction of deaf and/or hard of hearing special education students, relieving teachers/counselors of routine clerical tasks, and assisting students by providing for special health care needs.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL)
  • Assist deaf or hard of hearing students in mainstream, resource or self-contained classrooms. Includes using fluent signing to interpret the lesson as taught by the classroom teacher, helping the student ask questions of the teacher
  • Assists deaf or hard of hearing students in the interaction and communication with hearing students and staff
  • Interpret for deaf or hard of hearing students participating in extra-curricular events and for adult deaf parent-teacher conferences
  • Works collaboratively by assisting teachers in assessment, curriculum implementation, student interactions, enforcing safe behaviors, and enhancing social growth of student in the classroom
  • Will interpret behavioral directions and physically assist when necessary
  • Ability to voice to sign and sign to voice or cue to voice and voice to cue

Job Functions:

  • Adapts classroom work/homework under the direction of the teacher for the purpose of providing a method to support and/or reinforce classroom objectives
  • Assists teachers and parents for the purpose of implementing lesson plans and/or developing students' daily living and behavioral skills
  • Maintains classroom equipment, students' files/records as pertains to special education files/records for the purpose of ensuring a safe and appropriate learning environment
  • Performs record keeping and basic clerical functions, correcting student work, scheduling, copying etc. for the purpose of supporting the teacher or program
  • Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities
  • Confers with teachers, parents and/or appropriate community agency personnel for the purpose of assisting in evaluation of students' progress and/or implementing students' objectives
  • Participates in various meetings for the purpose of sharing information and/or improving one's skills/knowledge
  • Performs the essential of the job with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Completes work at assigned workstations
  • Consistently deals with people in a courteous and professional manner
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

Qualifications :

Minimum Employment Requirement :
Must be at least 18 years of age and hold a high school diploma or its equivalent. In addition, must meet one of the following:

  • Have received a qualifying score on a state approved para educator assessment; or
  • Hold an associate degree or higher from an accredited college or university; or
  • Have earned 72 quarter credits (100 level or higher) or 48 semester credits (100 level or higher) at an accredited college or university
  • Job Requirements:

    • Experience Required :
      Prior job-related experience paid or volunteer with school age children
    • Education Required:

      High School diploma or recognized equivalent, in combination with post secondary education or equivalent qualifications as previously stated
    • Must have met the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) with a minimum score of 4.0, and the EIPA written test with a passing score; or
    • Or, National Interpreter Certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), and the EIPA written test with a passing score.
    • Required completion of core competencies as defined by IDIEA
    • Required passage of American Sign Language (ASL) test

    Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities

    Required:

    Skills to perform basic clerical functions, perform basic arithmetic calculations, operate standard office equipment, including the use of basic computer applications, use English in verbal and written form, use correct grammar, punctuation and spelling. Skills to communicate effectively, problem solve.

    Knowledge of principles of child development, instructional processes, problem solving methodology.
