Position: Chehalis- Temporary Ed Para Specialist- ASL Interpreter (Student Support) 2026-27

Position Overview

This position is for a Temporary Educational Paraprofessional Specialist – ASL Interpreter. The anticipated schedule is 6.0 hours per day, 8:50 a.m. to 3:20 p.m. The term ends June 11, 2027, or the last day of school, whichever comes first, or if changes to student enrollment occur. This position is open until filled.

The role is a one‑on‑one student‑specific position, acting as an American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter. Under direct supervision the paraprofessional will assist in the supervision and instruction of deaf and/or hard‑of‑hearing special education students, relieve teachers and counselors of routine clerical tasks, and support students by providing for special health‑care needs.

Essential Job Functions
  • Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL)
  • Assist deaf or hard‑of‑hearing students in mainstream, resource or self‑contained classrooms by interpreting the lesson as taught by the classroom teacher and helping the student ask questions of the teacher
  • Assist deaf or hard‑of‑hearing students in interaction and communication with hearing students and staff
  • Interpret for deaf or hard‑of‑hearing students participating in extra‑curricular events and for adult deaf parent‑teacher conferences
  • Work collaboratively by assisting teachers in assessment, curriculum implementation, student interactions, enforcing safe behaviors, and enhancing students’ social growth in the classroom
  • Interpret behavioral directions and provide physical assistance when necessary
  • Ability to voice‑to‑sign and sign‑to‑voice or cue‑to‑voice and voice‑to‑cue
Other Job Functions
  • Adapt classroom work/homework under the direction of the teacher to support or reinforce classroom objectives
  • Assist teachers and parents in implementing lesson plans and developing students’ daily‑living and behavioral skills
  • Maintain classroom equipment and students’ files/records pertaining to special education to ensure a safe learning environment
  • Perform record keeping and basic clerical functions, correct student work, schedule, copy, etc. to support the teacher or program
  • Assist other personnel as required to support them in completing their work activities
  • Consult with teachers, parents, and community agency personnel to evaluate student progress and implement objectives
  • Participate in meetings to share information and improve skills/knowledge
  • Perform the essential duties with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Complete work at assigned workstations
  • Consistently deal with people in a courteous and professional manner
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Job Requirements and Qualifications

Minimum Employment Requirement
:
Must be at least 18 years of age and hold a high school diploma or equivalent. Additionally, must meet one of the following:

  • Have received a qualifying score on a state‑approved para educator assessment
  • Hold an associate degree or higher from an accredited college or university
  • Have earned 72 quarter credits (100 level or higher) or 48 semester credits (100 level or higher) at an accredited college or university
  • Experience Required
    :
    Prior paid or volunteer experience with school‑age children.

    Education Required
    :
    High School diploma or recognized equivalent, combined with post‑secondary education or equivalent qualifications as previously stated.

    Must have met the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) with a minimum score of 4.0, and the EIPA written test with a passing score; or

    National Interpreter Certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), and the EIPA written test with a passing score.

    Completion of core competencies as defined by IDIEA.

    Passage of an American Sign Language (ASL) test.

    Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
    • Basic clerical functions, basic arithmetic calculations, operating standard office equipment, use of basic computer applications, use of English in verbal and written form, correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Communicate effectively and solve problems.
