Job Summary

Under general supervision, coordinates and performs a variety of detention duties on behalf of the Lewis County Juvenile Detention Center; provides for the safety, security, and care of detainees; monitors surveillance equipment and inmate well‑being; supervises detainee activities; prepares and maintains detention records and reports; and performs other related duties as assigned.

This on‑call position does not guarantee a minimum number of hours. Work schedules are variable, dependent upon the needs of the facility. Employees may be required to work days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays and may have to respond to same‑day call‑ins. Flexibility and reliability in responding to staffing needs are essential components of this role.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Provide custody, safety, security, and well‑being of juveniles detained at the County’s Juvenile Detention Center.
  • Conduct security/perimeter checks, detainee head counts, and monitor security cameras.
  • Monitor all movement of juveniles within the Detention Center’s facilities; maintain orderly conduct of detainees and visitors; respond to minor disturbances and/or emergency situations.
  • Supervise groups of juveniles during daily recreation periods, meals, and/or other activities.
  • Provide care of detainees, including meals and healthcare; supply juveniles with clean clothing and hygiene items; evaluate medical requests and coordinate treatment by medical providers.
  • Transport detainees to medical appointments, mental health screenings, and/or other appointments.
  • Transfer juveniles by County vehicle to other facilities within and/or outside of the State.
  • Supervise the activities of juvenile and/or status offenders performing community service as assigned.
  • Respond to inquiries and/or complaints from parents, attorneys, law‑enforcement personnel, mental health/social workers, medical providers, and the general public.
  • Prepare and maintain a variety of detention records, reports, and documentation including incident reports and case file documents.
Physical Demands

Work is performed in and around juvenile detention facilities and may involve standing, walking, bending, reaching, kneeling, crouching, physically restraining detainees, and lifting objects up to 100 pounds. Exposure to infectious diseases and combative youths and/or parents is involved.

Qualifications

High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent; AND one (1) year of experience working with youth in an organizational capacity; or any combination of education and experience that would provide the applicant with the desired skills, knowledge, and ability to perform the job.

First Aid/CPR Certification and a valid Driver’s License are required. Must successfully complete a criminal history background investigation, including a psychological evaluation and a polygraph examination.
