Job Overview
A multi‑task role from managing and controlling all tipping hall operations to ensuring articulated vehicles are loaded safely and in accordance with KPIs within the Essex County Council Waste service. The role also manages on‑site traffic for local district councils and third parties to meet contractual tipping arrangements safely.
Key Responsibilities- Operate the front‑loading shovel and 360‑degree wheeled material handler to move, load and transport waste safely.
- Lead all mobile plant operations to safely contain and manage waste from RCVs, including pushing waste using the loading shovel and loading lorries.
- Ensure site users comply with site rules, health & safety, and environmental policies.
- Conduct pre‑use inspections, report defects, and perform general and preventive maintenance.
- Support the site supervisor with weighbridge duties, inspections, paperwork and other duties as required.
- Maintain cleanliness of the site, manage spills, and report contamination or non‑conforming waste.
- Report accidents, incidents, near misses and environmental hazards promptly.
- Carry out other duties commensurate with the role as required.
- Lead mobile plant operations and ensure safe waste management from RCVs.
- Follow site‑specific rules at all Essex County Council waste facilities.
- Enforce site rules through induction and training of site users.
- Perform pre‑use inspections and maintain equipment condition.
- Assist with weighbridge and site supervisor tasks when not operating plant.
- Ensure the site is free from litter and manage spill containment.
- Protect resources from loss, damage or theft.
- Report contamination, accidents, incidents and environmental hazards.
- Execute other duties as needed.
- Full valid driving licence.
- Material Handler and Loading Shovel Qualification desirable (training provided).
- Experience operating plant machinery, preferably within the waste industry.
- Understanding of waste operations and mechanical knowledge.
- Experience working with the public and manual handling experience.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Self‑motivated with willingness to undertake further training.
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions with appropriate protective clothing.
Annual salary up to £28,033, plus a 6% flat‑rate allowance for working Sundays. Weekend work required every two weeks.
