This opportunity entails managing assigned project(s) throughout their full lifecycle, including developing the scope and technical sections of proposal and procurement documents, participating in contract negotiations, and overseeing the delivery of the project plan to achieve HNTB’s 4 for 4 performance: quality work, on time, on budget and client satisfaction. The Project Manager I – Engineering proactively manages the budget, schedule, technical requirements, contractual obligations, and client communications to support the project’s objectives, while providing high-level technical tasks and reviewing design specifications, calculations, reports, and plans.
Coordination with internal and external partners, cross-discipline teams, and functional teams is essential for problem solving and design issues. The role typically manages project team(s) for one or more strategic projects.
- Plan and distribute discipline-specific work, ensuring adherence to schedule and budget.
- Assist in marketing responsibilities, including proposal generation.
- Assist with development of scope of work and level of effort for projects and assignments within the discipline.
- Oversee completeness and accuracy of the project team’s work within the technical discipline, guiding and mentoring the team toward project objectives.
- Coordinate technical aspects of the project with client counterparts and teaming partners at the staff level.
- Work closely with other disciplines on multi-discipline projects.
- Recruit, hire, develop, and retain staff, including planning for staff reporting, performance and compensation reviews, and succession. Coordinate schedules and approve time cards.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and 6 years of relevant experience, or
- Master’s degree in Engineering and 5 years of relevant experience, or
- PhD in Engineering and 4 years of relevant experience.
- Experience delivering projects on-time, on-budget, and with quality and client satisfaction on smaller projects, identifying and escalating risk and change management issues.
- Leadership experience for a smaller project or task order with minimal or no subconsultants.
- Lead and perform field inspections of complex bridges and tunnels according to FHWA’s NBIS and NTIS and other state and federal standards.
- Proficiency using system tools to manage, monitor, and deliver projects or task orders.
- Understanding of HNTB processes and ability to implement them where applicable.
- Interface with client-level peers on smaller projects or task orders.
- Provide technical guidance to team and task leads and perform portions of the technical work.
- Develop high-quality inspection reports that accurately depict existing conditions and critical findings.
- Develop condition quantities and repair costs for National Bridge Element Level and National Tunnel Element Level reporting.
- Perform and review structural analysis, design, and plans as needed.
- Perform and review load rating analysis, calculation, and report development as needed.
- Assist in construction phase services such as submittal review and field support.
- Provide technical guidance and oversight for staff throughout the project/task life.
- Mentor junior staff in their development, especially inspection team members.
- Monitor quality and budget on all assigned tasks.
- Master’s degree in Engineering.
- 10 years of relevant experience.
- Professional Engineer (PE) certification.
- Bridge and tunnel inspection experience with local agencies such as MassDOT, MBTA, RIDOT, and CTDOT.
- Successful completion of FHWA-NHI’s Fracture Critical Inspection Techniques for Steel Bridges course.
