Geosciences Testing and Research, Inc. (GTR) is a dynamic and growing geotechnical engineering and consulting firm with offices in North Chelmsford, Massachusetts, and Armonk, New York. We are seeking a Junior Structural Engineer with 0-2 years of experience to join our Massachusetts office.

At GTR, we specialize in geotechnical and structural engineering, deep foundation design, instrumentation and monitoring, pile and shaft testing, and construction support. Our engineers work on challenging Heavy Civil, Infrastructure, Transportation, Marine, and Commercial projects throughout the Northeast.

From day one, you’ll work alongside experienced engineers on meaningful projects while building the technical and professional skills needed for a successful consulting engineering career.

Position Summary

This position is ideal for a recent graduate or early-career engineer looking to build a strong foundation in structural engineering. Approximately 25% of this role involves fieldwork, with the remaining time spent supporting engineering design, structural analysis, calculations, and project documentation.

Working under the guidance of experienced engineers, you will gain exposure to every phase of a project—from design through construction—while contributing to a wide variety of structural and foundation engineering projects.

Responsibilities
  • Assist with the structural analysis and design of temporary and permanent structures.
  • Support the design of shallow and deep foundation systems.
  • Prepare engineering calculations and design documentation.
  • Assist with retaining structures, support-of-excavation systems, marine structures, and heavy civil projects.
  • Review project plans, specifications, and engineering reports.
  • Assist in preparing technical reports and engineering recommendations.
Field Responsibilities
  • Perform construction observations and structural inspections.
  • Observe foundation installation and structural construction activities.
  • Collect field measurements and project documentation.
  • Coordinate with contractors and project teams during construction.
  • Prepare field reports and inspection documentation.
Project Support
  • Assist project engineers with engineering analyses and calculations.
  • Support the preparation of construction drawings and design packages.
  • Review engineering data and assist with quality control.
  • Participate in project meetings and internal design reviews.
  • Continue developing technical knowledge through mentorship and professional training.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering with a structural engineering concentration or related discipline.
  • 0-2 years of structural engineering experience (internships and co‑op experience are encouraged).
  • Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) certification preferred or ability to obtain shortly after hire.
  • Strong interest in structural engineering and consulting.
Skills & Abilities
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Experience with AutoCAD is preferred.
  • Exposure to structural analysis software is a plus.
  • Ability to travel to project sites, including occasional overnight assignments.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to safely navigate construction sites and lift up to 50 pounds when required.
