Firmware Team Lead

Chelmsford, Massachusetts, United States

Rockwell Automation – Sensing, Safety and Industrial Components Business is seeking a Firmware Team Lead to contribute significantly to next‑generation product development. The role focuses on design, analysis, testing, and integration of firmware for embedded communication and control modules, reporting to the Firmware Manager.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead a small firmware team (5‑10 developers) for software enhancements and new product initiatives.
  • Manage development activities using Agile‑Scrum methodology: facilitate daily stand‑ups, sprint planning, backlog refinement, reviews, and retrospectives.
  • Maintain a high‑performance team with technical oversight and coaching.
  • Support hiring and evaluate performance of individual developers.
  • Monitor team progress daily, mitigate risks, and resolve roadblocks.
  • Work with project stakeholders to define success criteria and prioritize work.
  • Manage project deliverables, budgets, schedules, work plans, and performance requirements.
  • Participate in the design and development of new architectures and scalable product platforms.
  • Coordinate and communicate with cross‑functional teams—including Engineering, Product Management, and Manufacturing—to achieve customer satisfaction.
  • Collaborate with engineers located in the US, Europe, and Asia.
  • Develop embedded software on low‑cost/low‑power microcontrollers and ASICs.
  • Participate in code, requirements, and test case reviews.
  • Help define and maintain the software development process.
  • Author architecture‑level design documents.
  • Allocate time between supervisory responsibilities (30‑50%) and developer activities (50‑70%).
The Essentials – You Will Have
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent years of relevant work experience.
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S.; visa sponsorship is not provided.
The Preferred – You Might Also Have
  • At least 2 years of management experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related discipline.
  • 7+ years of firmware development experience.
  • Experience in a technical leadership role.
  • Delivered high‑quality C code for real‑time embedded environments.
  • Proficiency with code collaboration tools and design reviews.
  • Excellent design, debugging, and optimization skills.
  • Experience with Agile framework.
  • Knowledge of secure coding and testing practices.
  • Knowledge of cryptographic algorithms and protocols.
  • Understanding of RS‑232, USB, Ethernet, and packet‑based communication protocols.
  • Experience with embedded control peripherals such as A/D, D/A, timers, and general‑purpose I/O.
  • Experience with standard version control systems.

The base salary compensation range for this role is $ – $ USD with an annual target bonus of 5% of base salary. Pay varies by skills, education, and experience.
