Job Description

Chelsea Public Schools (CPS) is a gateway school system that welcomes and educates all students and families. CPS educates over 6,300 students in 10 schools, including a pre‑K‑1st grade school, 4 elementary schools, 3 middle schools, and 2 high schools.

Responsibilities
  • Effective planning and assessment of curriculum and instruction.
  • Meet and instruct assigned students at the locations and times designated.
  • Plan a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students.
  • Conduct effective instruction, making learning goals clear to students and using appropriate instructional and questioning techniques.
  • Use innovative approaches and instructional strategies, including effective technology use, to increase student learning and confidence.
  • Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
  • Promote high standards and expectations for student achievement and behavior.
  • Guide the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum standards and establish clear objectives that reflect these standards for all lessons, units, and projects.
  • Implement the district's mission, philosophy of education, and instructional standards and objectives.
  • Assess and document student accomplishments regularly and provide progress reports as required.
  • Document learning problems and seek assistance from district specialists as needed.
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulation.
  • Assist administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct, and for the classroom, develop reasonable rules of behavior and procedure while maintaining order fairly and justly.
  • Be available to students and parents for education‑related purposes outside instructional hours when required or requested under reasonable terms.
  • Strive to maintain and improve professional competence, especially as it relates to the specific assignment and student grade and subject area appropriateness.
  • Attend staff meetings as required.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with others.
  • Maintain open communication with students, colleagues, and parents concerning both academic and behavioral progress.
  • Promote equity and appreciation of diversity to ensure equitable opportunities for student learning, including implementing specific strategies for students with special needs, 504 plans, and second‑language learners.
  • Provide equal educational opportunity to all individuals regardless of race, color, gender, age, marital status, homelessness, religion, national origin, or disability.
  • Support students with disabilities in a general education setting.
  • Maintain the scheduling of the auditorium and have an interest in running the after‑school drama club.
  • Perform other job‑related duties as assigned.
Qualifications Required
  • A Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university.
  • Valid Massachusetts Department of Elementary & Secondary Education teacher licensure in grade and subject area appropriate for the assignment.
  • Sheltered English Immersion Endorsement for core content teachers.
  • Ability to work with a diverse population.
  • Knowledge of MA curriculum frameworks, curriculum, instruction, and assessment.
  • Knowledge of differentiated instruction and response to intervention.
  • Citizenship, residency, or work visa required.
Qualifications Preferred
  • Bilingual Spanish.
  • Dual certification in ESL and/or Moderate Disabilities.
Terms

All teachers are members of the Chelsea Teachers Union (CTU). The length of the school day is 6.5 hours, subject to longer hours for schools with extended day. The number of school days is 184 days.
