About the Chelsea Veterans Home

The Veterans Home at Chelsea is a state‑funded, fully accredited health care facility that offers veterans quality health care, including full‑time residential accommodations and educational and social services. The Home staffs approximately 330+ administrators, clinicians, nurses, certified nursing assistants, skilled trade, dietary, housekeeping staff, contractors, consultants, and general administrative personnel. It provides comprehensive inpatient and outpatient medical services to veterans, including 24/7 care for terminal illness and residential, social, and educational services.

Responsibilities
  • Provide overall delivery of quality nursing care to a culturally diverse resident veteran population.
  • Identify, evaluate and reassess veteran health status and response to treatment; confer with assigned doctor for treatment modalities.
  • Collaborate with other health team members to facilitate positive patient care outcomes, including physical/occupational therapy, hospice, and geropsychiatry, and participate in program planning and development.
  • Partner effectively with residents, families and significant others, providing psychosocial support in coping with emotional, mental, medical and physical decline or impairment.
  • Verify physician orders for accuracy, allergies and other necessary veteran data; transcribe and implement orders.
  • Identify healthcare‐associated infections and appropriate interventions in conjunction with the Infection Control processes.
  • Foster the Chelsea Veterans Home mission, vision and operational policies while maintaining regulatory and department compliance with Joint Commission, and state/federal regulations.
  • Facilitate instruction to other nursing personnel, including techniques, procedures and equipment.
  • Investigate complaints by veterans and/or staff; facilitate methods of treatments, room assignment and attempts to resolve issues.
  • Maintain personal and professional growth and proficiency by attending in‑services, seminars and workshops; remain current with healthcare trends and contemporary nursing practices.
  • Participate in daily or weekly staff meetings to discuss patient status and other concerns; serve on other departmental committees as needed.
  • Provide ongoing feedback and appraisal to assigned staff; document staff performance matters when appropriate.
  • Interact with appropriate management personnel regarding veteran care and related issues.
Required Qualifications
  • Current, active registration as a Registered Nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.
  • Current and valid CPR/BLS certification through the American Heart Association.
Preferred Qualifications
  • At least two (2) years of supervisory experience.
  • At least one (1) year of experience as a charge nurse in a long‑term care environment.
  • Proficient understanding of geriatric nursing principles, dementia, hospice, and modern long‑term care.
  • Knowledge of standard nursing policies and emergency procedures.
  • Capacity to maintain accurate records and exercise discretion with confidential information.
  • Demonstrated success in the development and implementation of quality care, health and safety approaches.
  • Proficient usage of Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Schedule
  • Flex days off and every other weekend for both shifts.
  • Schedule and days off are based on the operational needs of the facility.
  • 24‑hour/7‑day facility – mandatory overtime may be required.
Emergency Status

This position has been deemed an emergency personnel position. During a declared State of Emergency and in non‑emergency situations or adverse weather, reporting to work is required.
