Job Summary

The College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Science invites applications for a 100% special faculty/lecturer position in the Fine and Performing Arts Department to begin mid‑September 2026. The Lecturer in Costume Design and Technology will serve as a key faculty member in the Theatre Program, with primary responsibilities in teaching, production, and costume shop management. This multidisciplinary position supports both the academic and production missions of the program, emphasizing career‑connected learning and hands‑on student mentorship.

Responsibilities
  • Teaching – Maintain a typical teaching load of 30 credits per academic year, subject to department needs.
    • Teach undergraduate courses in Costume Design and Technology, including construction, textiles, rendering, and design processes.
    • Teach additional courses as assigned based on expertise and departmental needs, such as Stage Make‑up, Theatre in the Humanities, Theatre History, and Concepts of Theatrical Design.
    • Integrate experiential and career‑connected learning opportunities into coursework.
  • Production Design and Costume Shop Management – Equivalent to 15 credits of teaching release.
    • Serve as Costume Designer for up to three main‑stage productions annually, including concept development, collaboration with directors and production team, costume rendering, research, fittings, and execution, overseeing budgets and schedules.
    • Act as Costume Shop Manager, responsible for all aspects of costume production: supervising and mentoring student employees and production crews, overseeing construction, alterations, and maintenance, managing stock, inventory, and organization, maintaining equipment and supplies, ensuring safe working practices, coordinating wardrobe needs for all departmental productions.
  • Service and Professional Responsibilities – Participate in assessment of student learning outcomes, maintain health and safety protocols in classrooms, labs, and production spaces, engage in departmental and college activities as appropriate, and participate in committee service only when explicitly assigned and approved by the Department Chair and Dean.
Required Qualifications
  • MFA in Theatre.
  • Expertise in theatrical costume design, construction, and make‑up design and application.
  • Record of success teaching theatre classes at the college‑level.
  • Professional theatre credits in costume design and technology.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply a culturally responsive and flexible approach that supports the needs, including universal accessibility, of students, faculty, staff, and the public.
Preferred Qualifications
  • MFA in Costume Design.
  • Ability to teach lecture‑based theatre classes such as Theatre History and Theatre in the Humanities.
  • Record of success teaching at the college level for 3+ years.
  • Experience with Health & Safety protocols.
  • Experience with costume shop management.

The expected salary upon hire is $51,989. In addition to salary, EWU offers a comprehensive benefits package including health insurance, life and disability insurance, and retirement.
