POSITION: Special Education Teacher, 1.0 FTE
ASSIGNMENT: Functional Academic Classroom (FAC)
SCHEDULE: 7 hours/day (7:20 a.m.–2:50 p.m.);
Monday‑Friday;
School Year + additional days (reference Appendix B‑1)
LOCATION: Cheney Middle School, 740 Betz Rd, Cheney, WA 99004
SUPERVISOR: Building Principal(s)
POSITION TYPE: Certificated, Continuing; the district reserves the option to return to the pool for non‑continuing, leave replacement positions.
COMPENSATION: $59,028–$115,278 per year, depending on prior school district experience; up to two years of private sector experience may be applied to salary placement with HR review/approval; pay is annualized over 12 months (if hired after the start of the school year, spread over remaining months of the fiscal year).

ResponsibilitiesThe teacher of special education creates an educationally supportive instructional environment for students with disabilities and manages the instructional program, data collection, and communication with families and general education teachers.
Essential Functions- Develop and implement IEPs that address student strengths and needs and align to state standards
- Develop lesson plans and instructional materials/activities
- Translate lesson plans into learning experiences to best utilize available instructional time
- Instruct eligible special education students in content areas as outlined in students’ IEPs and consistent with program requirements and district curriculum goals
- Assist in developing positive support plans and behavioral intervention plans
- Demonstrate professional training and successful experience in inclusion, pull‑out, or self‑contained programming
- Demonstrate knowledge of a range of disabilities, their impact on learning, and instructional strategies
- Demonstrate understanding of and ability to implement federal, state, and district requirements for providing free, appropriate public education to students with disabilities
- Collaborate with and include families in the IEP process
- Communicate student progress to students and families
- Demonstrate knowledge of general education content area curriculum
- Manage and maintain a positive classroom environment using appropriate guidance, discipline, and classroom‑management techniques
- Apply current technology with a multimedia approach to instruction
- Use a variety of instructional techniques and media consistent with students’ needs and capabilities
- Communicate, establish rapport, and work effectively with children, families, staff, community members, and administrators
- Serve as a consultant for school and district staff
- Provide instruction in a variety of settings including large groups, small groups, and individual students
- Train and provide immediate supervision to para educators
- Ensure safe and proper use of materials, equipment, and facilities
- Evaluate and document student performance growth; prepare progress reports
- Collaborate and share strategies to support student success with families, teachers, and community organizations
- Advocate for students at education plan meetings and other student‑focused meetings
- Analyze data to identify student needs and challenges
- Advocate to improve equity and access, achievement, and opportunities for all students
- Provide transitional services to students and parents
- Organize and prioritize daily, weekly, and monthly schedules
- Participate in building‑, department‑level, and special education meetings
- Actively participate in department meetings, staff meetings, and trainings
- Actively participate in district/building Professional Learning Communities (PLCs)
- Maintain confidentiality per FERPA guidelines
