Salary Range: $47,572 – $57,099, based on education, experience, and skills.
Job SummaryWe are seeking a skilled, team‑oriented Academic Advisor for the McNair Program. The Advisor will counsel students through the graduate school application process, especially PhD programs, providing writing instruction, review of statements of purpose, curriculum vitae, academic writing, and research materials. The Advisor will coordinate virtual events, facilitate small groups on research and writing, guide research projects, assist with recruitment and retention, and support students in interview preparation, acceptance decisions, and networking with faculty and alumni.
The Advisor will work closely with the director, faculty, and staff to develop program handbooks, website content, and promotional materials, while fostering a culturally competent environment that supports first‑generation, low‑income, and under‑represented students.

Required Qualifications- Experience in academic coaching, advising, counseling, or related field with individuals and groups.
- Understanding and experience in the graduate school application process at the college level.
- Strong knowledge of racial, economic, gender, LGBTQIA+, disability and other social justice issues and how to incorporate this into recruiting and preparing McNair participants.
- Knowledge of the graduate school application process.
- Excellent academic/technical writing skills.
- Desire to teach/instruct in program seminars.
- Understanding of the components of research writing.
- Experience working with undergraduates who are low‑income, first‑generation, and from under‑represented groups.
- Ability to maintain positive relationships with scholars, staff, faculty, and work‑study students, using a culturally competent, anti‑racist, critical approach.
- General knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
- Demonstrated ability to apply a responsive and flexible approach supportive of students, faculty, staff, and the public.
- Assist students in academic preparation for graduate school using culturally competent and anti‑racist strategies (25% of time).
- Guide research projects (25% of time).
- Develop and facilitate virtual events such as panels, keynotes, and research presentations to meet grant objectives (25% of time).
- Assist in instruction of seminars in writing, research, and graduate school application documents (25% of time).
- Assist in recruitment and retention of scholars in collaboration with campus departments and community organizations (15% of time).
- Assist in the development of program documents, correspondence, promotional materials, and maintaining the McNair website (15% of time).
- Assist in planning and implementing day‑to‑day services of the McNair Scholar Program (10% of time).
- Collaborate with director, faculty, and staff in researching and updating best practices for serving first‑generation and under‑represented students (10% of time).
