Note: The district reserves the option to return to this pool for non‑continuing, leave replacement positions.
Compensation$59,028–$115,278 per year depending on prior school district experience;
Pay is annualized over 12 months (if hired after start of school year, spread over remaining months of fiscal year Sept–Aug)
- Professional Development and Supply Allocation Funds: $700 per FTE employee annually for classes, conferences, workshops, work‑related materials (no gift cards) and certification support.
- New Certified Staff Funds: one‑time $400 per FTE reimbursement to new employees with one year or less teaching experience (includes substitute time) to support initial classroom setup and supply needs. Not applicable to partial‑year leave replacement contracts.
Paid leave; if utilizing flexible hours/schedule, position hours must generate at least 630 work hours in the current school year for the following to apply: medical, dental, vision, and basic life and AD&D insurance; retirement plan; deferred compensation (DRS and TSA).
QualificationsValid Washington State Teacher Certificate with early childhood special education endorsement OR special education endorsement and early childhood education endorsement; WSP/FBI criminal history background clearance.
General InformationCheney Public Schools is a rapidly growing district serving approximately 5,300 students and encompasses the towns of Cheney and Airway Heights, an expansive rural area, and a developing industrial and residential area on the West Plains. The district covers 380 square miles.

Responsibilities and Essential FunctionsThe teacher of special education assumes responsibility to create an educationally supportive instructional environment appropriate to the needs of students with disabilities and those eligible for Special Education. They collaborate with the special education team, develop IEPs, implement instructional programs, collect data and document progress, and communicate with families and professionals.
- Develop and implement IEPs that address student strengths and needs and align to state standards.
- Develop lesson plans and instructional materials.
- Translate lesson plans into learning experiences that best utilize the available instructional time.
- Instruct eligible preschool/kindergarten‑age students in content areas, as outlined in IEPs and district curriculum goals.
- Assist in developing positive support plans and behavioral intervention plans.
- Understand ECEAP and the needs of developmentally delayed and typically developing students.
- Demonstrate professional training or prior experience in early childhood education, inclusion services, or self‑contained programming.
- Demonstrate knowledge of a range of disabilities and instructional strategies.
- Demonstrate knowledge of physical, psychological, and social characteristics of students.
