The Axel Group is seeking a Controller for our client's team. This role offers an exciting opportunity for a seasoned financial professional to lead the company's financial operations within a dynamic construction environment. The position involves overseeing all accounting functions, financial planning, and operational management, combining strategic leadership with hands‑on day‑to‑day responsibilities in a small construction company setting.
Responsibilities:- Lead the company’s financial planning and develop long‑term strategies.
- Prepare annual budgets and financial forecasts.
- Monitor project and departmental profitability and analyze key financial metrics.
- Generate and present monthly executive financial reports.
- Manage banking relationships and financing arrangements.
- Develop financial policies and internal controls.
- Oversee all accounting functions, including financial statement preparation, general ledger management, and audits.
- Manage project budgets, job costing, billing, collections, and revenue recognition processes.
- Oversee cash flow, including operating lines of credit, collections, and vendor payments.
- Administer payroll, employee benefits, and compliance with prevailing wage requirements.
- Maintain vendor relationships and ensure contract compliance.
- Lead HR functions such as recruitment, onboarding, employee relations, and compliance.
- Manage risk and insurance renewals, claims, and subcontractor insurance compliance.
- Oversee company records, licensing, and regulatory reporting.
- Coordinate accounting software and technology systems.
- Participate in strategic planning, operational efficiencies, and business development initiatives.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration; CPA/CMA/MBA preferred.
- 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, with a minimum of 5 years in commercial construction accounting.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, percentage‑of‑completion accounting, WIP reporting, and job costing.
- Experience with construction contracts, payroll, and prevailing wage requirements.
- Proficiency with Quick Books, Sage 300 CRE, or similar construction accounting software.
- Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel.
- Preferred experience in government contracting (Federal, State, or Municipal) and Davis‑Bacon certified payroll.
